Why Do I Cry So Much

Its one thing to feel the need to cry after a particularly hard day. But some people feel that they need to randomly cry, and others are shocked at how uncontrollable their tears are. It is as though a waterfall is coming from their eyes, sometimes at surprising times.

That instinct is often just emotion trying to find its way out. Anxiety is excitatory to the body it activates the fight or flight system. Your desire to cry may be related to the way your body is reacting to that system, with the intense emotions and stress during that time overwhelming the body.

Fear is scary, and your flight mode may trigger your body to produce large amounts of tears as a way to let out that stress.

How To Stop Uncontrollable Crying

It can be hard to imagine how one might be able to stop crying spells when there is no cause and they are unpredictable. However, there are ways to prevent and slow these crying spells, including distraction, monitoring your triggers, and relaxation skills.

Here are eight ways to stop or limit uncontrollable crying:

  • Engage in relaxation skills like breathwork, such as deep breathing through the nose, putting your tongue to the roof of your mouth to slow your brain down, and progressive muscle relaxation.1
  • Find healthy distractions, such as focusing on another event, changing your thought process , or counting parts of the area around you.1
  • Practice grounding techniques, such as turning a ring on your hand for touch, counting things you can smell or hear, or pinching your skin if that is helpful for you.

    Glands located above your eyes produce most of your tears. Theyre called lachrymal glands. The word lachrymal means tear. Every time you blink, tears flow to your eyes from ducts attached to your lachrymal glands. This keeps the surface of your eyes lubricated and protects them from substances like dust, smoke, or onion gasses. Tears also drain into your nose.

    • Consider therapy: In many cases, you might not be crying because you are not equipped with the tools to handle your emotions properly. Therapy can help with this. A therapist can provide you with guidance as you explore and learn about your feelings and emotional defenses that may inhibit your ability to more freely cry.
    • Lean on your support system: Sometimes, you might not be crying because you keep all of your emotions bottled up and do not share them with your support system. Confiding in loved ones about your emotional struggles may allow you to feel less alone and better able to share your emotions and tears.
