Your Criminal Record Is Clean

As with many things, this is a case-by-case basis. We do background checks on all surrogates and significant others . We take into account what is on your record, when these events happened, and overall history.

If you are unsure if something in your history would disqualify you, ask us or take a short questionnaire to see if you pre-qualify in becoming a surrogate.

What To Expect During The Process Of Surrogacy

Surrogacy is a process in which an egg is donated by one female person and used by another to create a baby. Surrogacy can be an option for people who cannot conceive or do not want to have children through traditional methods. There are three main steps in the surrogacy process:1) Screening and Selection Process2) In-Vitro Fertilization 3) Birth of the Baby

If I Suffered From Postpartum Depression Will This Prevent Me From Being A Surrogate

Not necessarily. Before you begin the medical portion of the surrogacy process, you will complete a psychological screening to determine that you are mentally and emotionally ready to become a surrogate. Part of the screening will ask you questions about how you anticipate feeling once the surrogacy process is over and the baby is with the intended parents.

If you have more questions about the health requirements to become a surrogate or are ready to begin your surrogacy journey, contact a surrogacy professional now.

You Have An Adequate Support System

A spouse/significant other, if applicable, is required to be a significant part of the process so they need to be very supportive of this journey. Whether you are in a relationship or not, it is important you have a support system throughout this process.

Although your friends and family arent the ones carrying the pregnancy, they will be impacted by your journey. Whether its helping with childcare or giving emotional support, its crucial you have a support system in place.

Surrogacy And Mental Health Background Checks

Pin on Test

In order to assure youre mentally ready to handle another pregnancy and surrogacy, background checks on your mental health are conducted. If youre not honest during the application, it will come out in our screening process. It seems picky, and we understand that, but our goal is to make your surrogacy and pregnancy process as enjoyable as possible. Ensuring that youll be mentally stable throughout the process protects not only you and the baby but also the intended parents. These checks are in the best interest of everyone.

Associations Between Sociodemographic Characteristics Psychological Symptoms And Decision

Of the sociodemographic characteristics of the surrogates, gender, years of formal education, total annual income, and overall rating of relationship quality were significantly associated with anxiety, depression, and PTSS symptom scores and decision-making confidence scores . Specifically, although the magnitude of the associations was small, years of formal education, total income, and relationship quality were inversely correlated with anxiety and depression symptom scores. Female sex, total income and relationship quality were also inversely associated with PTSS scores. On the other hand, surrogates’ decision-making confidence was positively associated only with the quality of relationship with patient . Patients’ sociodemographic and clinical variables were not associated with surrogates’ psychological symptoms or decision-making confidence.

Can I Be A Surrogate If I Take Antidepressants

If you are a prospective surrogate treating your depression diagnosis with antidepressants, you may think youll be able to move forward. After all, your depression is being effectively treated, and you are mentally prepared for the challenges and rewards awaiting you as a gestational carrier.

However, you cannot be a surrogate if youre on antidepressants. Surrogacy professionals will often require you to be off antidepressant and antianxiety medication for at least 12 months prior to starting the surrogacy process and for good reason.

While its important for a woman to balance her mental health needs with the needs of her pregnancy, this balance shifts when you are carrying a child for someone else. Intended parents go through a lot before coming to surrogacy theyve often spent months or years trying other infertility treatments before choosing this family-building path. Therefore, they want the best chance of success possible. That means a healthy gestational carrier who can give them the best opportunity to have a child safely and successfully.

For many intended parents, the risks and unknowns of using a gestational carrier on antidepressants is too much. For that reason, many surrogacy agencies and fertility clinics will disqualify prospective surrogates who are taking antidepressants.

To get more information on whether taking antidepressants will disqualify you from the surrogacy process, please contact a surrogacy professional today.

Surrogate Health Requirements Faqs

As mentioned, the best person to talk to about Pennsylvania health requirements to be a surrogate mother will be a reproductive endocrinologist. A lot of factors determine your eligibility as a gestational carrier, and these are best evaluated by an experienced professional.

That said, there are a few common questions we receive about surrogate health requirements. Weve briefly answered them here to help you learn more, but we always encourage you to speak with a local medical professional for personalized guidance.

1. Can I be a surrogate after tubal ligation?

Yes in fact, this is the preferable situation for many people. When you undergo surrogacy after a tubal ligation, you will be unable to get pregnant with your own children. Most surrogates bear the inherent risk of becoming pregnant with their own child when taking fertility medication, but that wont be an issue for you. Your intended parents will likely be relieved to find out that you are being a surrogate after having your tubes tied.

2. Can a woman in menopause be a surrogate?

3. How many times can you be a surrogate?

Again, every fertility clinic will set their own rules for this, but the American Society for Reproductive Medicine recommends no more than five vaginal deliveries or three cesarean deliveries for surrogates, regardless of how many of those deliveries were for gestational pregnancies.

Your delivery history will just be one aspect of your medical background used to determine your eligibility.

Fathers: Pregnancy/childbirth And Depression

New fathers can also experience symptoms of peripartum depression. Symptoms may include fatigue and changes in eating or sleeping. An estimated 4% of fathers experience depression in the first year after their childs birth. Younger fathers, those with a history of depression and fathers with financial difficulties are at increased risk of experiencing depression.1

Can I Be A Surrogate If I Am Overweight

The answer is generally yes, but it depends on how overweight you are. Your Body Mass Index is a number that is calculated based on your height and weight and is used medically to assess your health. A BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 is considered normal and healthy for adults. A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese. If your BMI is under 30 we can usually work with you. If your BMI is 31 or 32 you will need to lose some weight to reach a BMI of less than 30 before you can be fully cleared for surrogacy.

If you are around 10 pounds over a BMI of 30, we can begin the application process and connect you with a nutritionist to help you get the weight off at no cost to you. However, your BMI must be under 30 prior to matching and embryo transfer.

What Causes Postpartum Depression After Surrogacy

Karen wasnt saddened by the separation from the baby she babysat in her uterus for months. Instead, her depression developed when she began to feel discarded and exploited by the system that was supposed to protect her.

At six weeks postpartum, an umbilical hernia directly related to the pregnancy meant she needed expensive medical treatment, including surgery. The amount of paperwork and red tape required to access the healthcare she needed left her feeling defeated and unloved.

I picked the agency I worked with because they had the best reputation of treating surrogates well, Karen said. I was treated great when I was pregnant. There were self-care funds set aside so I could get massages or get my nails done. I felt taken care of.

Karen underwent hernia surgery and suddenly started feeling depressed while she was home recovering. Her husband pointed out she was acting out of character and asked her to talk to her doctor. When she did, she was diagnosed with postpartum depression and quickly prescribed an antidepressant that had little to no effect on her depression.

It was stressful because I was about to lose the good insurance that The Dads were paying for, she said. Without insurance, Karen attempted to pay the doctor in cash, but when the arrangement fell through, she went six weeks without treatment.

I called it rich people insurance.

Deciding to be a surrogate, also known as a Gestational Carrier, is a selfless act, but as an agency, health is always our number one concern for everyone involved.

Just as we screen Intended Parents for criminal background and mental fitness, gestational carriers must go through rigorous screening processes as well.

Each agency has its requirements equal to or more strict than the guidelines set by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine .

The reproductive endocrinologist who transfers the embryo may also have their requirements and industry standards to uphold on what makes a good surrogate candidate, so agencies typically consider the RE’s requirements.

Who Is At Risk

Any new mother can experience symptoms of peripartum depression or other mood disorder. Women are at increased risk of depression during or after pregnancy if they have previously experienced depression or other mood disorders, if they are experiencing particularly stressful life events in addition to the pregnancy, or if they do not have the support of family and friends.

Research suggests that rapid changes in sex and stress hormones and thyroid hormone levels during pregnancy and after delivery have a strong effect on moods and may contribute to peripartum depression. Other factors include physical changes related to pregnancy, changes in relationships and at work, worries about parenting and lack of sleep.

When Surrogacy Gets Even More Complicated

Ask a woman who experienced a difficult pregnancy or birth and shes likely to tell you theres no amount of money in the world that could convince her to carry someone elses baby for close to forty weeks.

Yet, the most common complication of pregnancy is rarely discussed in preparation for surrogacy. We never talked about postpartum mental illness, Karen said as she recalled months of pregnancy support groups and therapy sessions. Postpartum suicide related to postpartum depression is a major contributor to maternal death in the U.S., but Karen never thought she could get postpartum depression.

Estimates of postpartum depression vary from 1520 percent of all new mothers. Postpartum mental health disorders can be triggered any time within the first postpartum year. Women who choose to be surrogates generally adapt well to life after the pregnancy and dont experience postpartum depression at higher rates than the non-surrogate population.

Surrogate pregnancies are generally coordinated through surrogacy agencies, unless the surrogacy arrangement is between friends or family. When working through an agency, candidates for surrogacy go through a stringent screening process, including mental health screening. Women who have previously experienced postpartum mental illness are immediately disqualified from surrogacy.

I never had postpartum depression before, so it was weird to me, Karen said.

Depression In New Fathers

Despite it not being talked about as much, new fathers can and do experience depression related to pregnancy and parenthood. Paternal postpartum depression is experienced by as many as one in four new fathers in the United States.

Though not as extreme, men also experience some hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy and the postpartum period. Plus, sleep deprivation can have a very serious effect on a persons mental state.

Symptoms of depression in new fathers are similar to those of postpartum mothers. Irritability, mood swings, loss of interest in activities he usually enjoys, feelings of hopelessness, and other signs that dont go away after a week or two can all point to depression.

If you suspect that you or your partner are experiencing paternal postpartum depression, reach out to your healthcare provider, a counselor, or a support group that can help you find treatment.

A History Of Chronic Depression May Be An Issue

Infertility Counseling

If you are currently on antidepressants or diagnosed with depression, then there is a strong chance you will be disqualified as a surrogate.

People suffering from depression are often wonderful people in need of love and support however, with pregnancy very real changes occur to the human body as well as brain chemistry.

Many hormonal changes, which may impact people with depression in a more severe way, could occur:

  • Before pregnancy while in the fertility medication phase.
  • During pregnancy while in the child’s growing phase.
  • After birth when hormones drop which may lead to post-partum depression , or in rare cases, Post-Partum Psychosis.

Women may become a risk to themselves if they are not supported and monitored throughout the entire process and we take these issues very seriously.

If your depression returns during pregnancy, or if you stopped treatment for your depression, big emotions may escalate quickly…and it is way more than, the baby blues, a cutsie term for very real issues referring to the period after birth, postpartum, where about 80% of women report unexpected feelings of anxiety, sadness, depression, and identity crisis.
