Mugwort Tea For Anxiety

Drinking green tea after dinner is my favourite daily ritual it helps me to relax and forget my worries before bed!

Green tea doesnt only taste good, it also has a number of health benefits.

Here are 6 great reasons why Ive incorporated this delicious drink in my diet and why you should too.

  • Helping Our MetabolismFirst things first, green tea contains properties that can help to increase your metabolic rate and burn fat in the short term. This means that, together with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle, green tea can help you try and lose weight. If you swap sugary and fizzy drinks for hot or iced green tea, you can save thousands of calories a year!
  • It Contains AntioxidantsWe all need a good daily dose of antioxidants those lovely molecules that help cleanse our bodies. Thanks to its gentle fermentation process, green tea is rich in natural antioxidants and flavonoids that kill free radicals those awful unstable molecules that damage your cells.
  • It Can Be Good For Your Teeth! The compounds contained in green tea kill bacteria found in the mouth, stopping them from attacking your teeth. In this way, green tea helps to prevent cavities and gum disease, as well as decreasing the chances of inflammation. That said, dont forget to brush and floss your teeth too!
  • Adding Lemon To Green Tea Can Help With Anxiety

While green tea is an ‘elixir’ in itself, when taken with lemon, the health benefits become even more profound.

Drinking green tea with lemon helps in bringing out more of the antioxidants present in the tea. This was published in the November 2014 edition of the Journal of Food Processing and Technology. The lemon also makes the antioxidants readily absorbable for your body. The citrus juice works by increasing the extraction of catechins present in green tea.

In fact, the increase is by up to six times compared to drinking tea without lemon. According to one study, an increased presence of catechins in the body has been found to decrease both depression and anxiety.

Studies involving oil extracted from a lemon show that it has powerful antidepressant properties. So, when you drink green tea with lemon, the combination of the two elements significantly increases the benefits against depression. Lemon works by modulating the levels of various hormones in the body. Most notably, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

    Black Tea For Anxiety

Black tea also contains both L-Theanine and EGCG, but less of each and more caffeine. Despite being the most caffeinated out of Camellia sinensis teas, black tea has also been shown to reduce stress levels.

There was a study done in London in 2006 that looked at stress and drinking caffeinated black tea for six weeks. Participants drinking black tea were able to de-stress quicker and had less of the stress hormone cortisol after being exposed to a stressful situation. Read more about the study and the results here.

There havent been any studies since, but it might be worth switching your cup of coffee for a cup of black tea in the morning. Black tea is definitely a good option if youre looking for a tea for anxiety with more caffeine.

As for the other Camellia sinensis teas, there just havent been enough studies but they all contain similar compounds as theyre all from the same plant read more about the difference between each type of tea here.

Increase Matcha Potency To Offset Human Stress

In the human trial, researchers sought to enhance the stress-reducing effects of matcha tea by testing a specialized blend of matcha with reduced caffeine content, made from tea leaves that had been prepared by irrigating them with hot water at 95 degrees C for three minutes. This experimental preparation, called test matcha, thereby enhanced quantities of theanine and arginine while suppressing caffeine ratio.

Thirty-nine healthy subjects were selected for this human trial and randomly allocated into experimental and control groups. Participants were university pharmacy students who were engaged in regular university life and a more intense, therefore anxiety-producing, pharmacy practice environment. All were free of acute or chronic diseases, were not taking major medications and were non-smoking.

Participants were instructed to drink 3 grams of either test or placebo matcha preparation per day, suspended in 500 milliliters of room-temperature water. They were asked to avoid other caffeine and theanine-rich beverages such as other teas, coffee and soda, for the duration of the experiment. They were also instructed to avoid caffeine-rich foods such as chocolate and to avoid alcohol.

The intake of test- or placebo-matcha was conducted for a period of 15 days, which began with seven days of normal collegiate life, followed by an intensified instructional experience of pharmacy practice that took place over eight days.

Currently several species of Annona are used due to their anxiolytic properties . The alkaloid extract of the leaves of Annona cherimola was prepared and administered to mice three times , before being tested by FST. The extract produced antidepressant activity in FST at 10 and 20 mg/kg. This effect was not related to the increase in locomotor activity of mice when evaluated in OFT. Several compounds were identified by HPLC-MS in the extract: liriodenine and three aporphine products 1,2-dimethoxy-5,6,6a,7-tetrahydro-4Hdibenzoquinoline3,8,9,10-tetraol, anonaine and nornuciferine. None of these compounds were isolated and tested .

People who consume green tea on a daily basis may experience a reduction in feelings of worry and stress as a result. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the herb ashwagandha can help reduce feelings of stress and weariness. According to the findings of one study published in 2012, ingesting the root extract dramatically lowered levels of stress over a period of two months.

Green Tea Catechins And Theanine Have A Natural Anti

Green tea polyphenols or antioxidants help fight depression possibly by acting on the HPA axis.

HPA axis is the network between the hypothalamus, a part of the brain and the major hormone-secreting glands in the body- pituitary and adrenal glands.

This network regulates our stress response and is influenced by cortisol levels, a hormone that participates in stress response. HPA axis dysfunction is observed in Major Depressive Disorder.

Catechins lower the level of stress hormone and ameliorate HPA axis dysfunction to relieve depressive and anxiety symptoms.

Another mode of action by which they reduce depressive symptoms is by influencing brain chemistry and improving antioxidant defences in the brain.

However, one study indicates that green tea catechins have negligible monoamine oxidase inhibitory action.

MAOIs or monoamine oxidase inhibitors are antidepressant agents that inhibit the activity of enzyme monoamine oxidase to recycle and preserve brain chemistry for a better mood.

So does that mean it does not affect our brain chemistry?

Well a study published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 2014 highlighted that a single dose of green tea extract influenced serotonin levels in human participants.

Whether it influences brain chemistry or not, catechins antioxidant and anti-stress action could be efficient enough to protect from mental health conditions.

Anhedonia is associated with disturbed reward learning.
