Both depression and anxiety are very common and often happen together. About 60% of people with anxiety also have symptoms of depression, and vice versa. Each condition can make symptoms of the other get worse or last longer.

The same genes may be behind both conditions. Anxiety and depression could also stem from the same structures or processes in the brain. Stress and trauma early in life can trigger both depression and anxiety.

If you have anxiety, you may be at greater risk for depression. Experts say avoiding the things you fear might lead to depression.

Making School A Hangout Spot

At Westwood, that meant building an environment to ease fears about school for students with anxiety or depressive disorders, while also providing academic remediation and disability services.

We had to dig out the root cause of why these kids werent coming to school, said Jessica Gluck, Westwoods assistant director of special services. These students are all at or above grade level, but they didnt feel comfortable, you know, navigating the hallways, being in the cafeteria, or being in those classrooms and having to speak in front of their peers. For these students, the environment was just too much and too overwhelming for them.

Now, high-anxiety students come to the TEAM Day School, a special school-within-the-school made up of two classrooms decked out in couches and bean bag chairs instead of desks, holding classes of five to six students at most.

We wanted to create an environment that looks more like a hangout spot than a school, which has really helped students who need that home base, Gluck said.

Students in the program come to school an hour later than the main start time and leave 25 minutes earlier to avoid crowds. They also stay in the same classroom, taught by a handful of teachers and a clinician, rather than changing classes. But the students also take part in regular counseling groups and a social-skills class, in which they learn techniques for managing stress and performance anxiety, and practice leading class discussions once a week.

Treatments For Anxiety And Depression:

Because anxiety and depression have so many similarities, the treatment for the two also has similarities. Currently, most treatment plans are centered around combating either the chemical imbalances or thought patterns associated with the two. In some cases, a combination approach works best.

When it comes to correcting chemical imbalances, medications are often used. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are commonly prescribed for both depression and anxiety. SSRIs work by reducing the amount of serotonin that is absorbed into the bloodstream. By preventing the absorption of serotonin into the bloodstream, SSRIs keep more serotonin in the brain. The increase of serotonin levels in the brain can help to reduce or eliminate the symptoms of depression caused by low serotonin levels. Contrary to popular belief, SSRIs do not create additional serotonin, they just help the body effectively utilize it.

When it comes to thought patterns, talk therapy with an anxiety or depression psychologist is often recommended. Talk therapy can used a variety of techniques to identify, address, and alter thought patterns that can be perpetuating the symptoms of anxiety and depression. It works well for those with anxiety and/or depression because it directly addresses the thought patterns associated with the two similar disorders.
