Only four of the 20 studies did not meet criteria for low risk of bias related to at least one type of bias . All studies that had some level of high risk only did so for one or two bias domains, with the majority only carrying risk in one domain. Overall, the risk of bias analysis revealed that no studies were high risk, that is carried a highrisk profile over all or most bias domains.

  • Learn and practice relaxation and deep breathing techniques.
  • Clear your head of concerns by writing a list of activities that need to be completed the next day and tell yourself you will think about it tomorrow.
  • Avoid long and late daytime naps.
  • Get regular exercise, but do it no later than a few hours before bedtime.
  • Do not spend time looking at television or looking at computer screens before bedtime because the light emission from display screens can interfere with the release of the brain chemical melatonin, which is a signal to the sleep centers in the brain that it is time for bed.
  • Don’t use caffeine, alcohol, or nicotine in the evening.
  • Don’t lie in bed tossing and turning. When you can’t sleep, go into another room and do something relaxing. When you start feeling like you may be able to sleep, get back in bed.
  • Use the bed only for sleeping and sexual activity. Don’t lie in bed to watch TV or read. This way, your bed becomes a cue for sleeping, not for lying awake.

Sleeping too much or not sleeping at all can be a sign of depression. These sleep problems alone are not the same thing as depression, but they can be one of its important symptoms.

As with all depression medication, there is a small but significant risk of suicidal thoughts or worsening of depression, particularly in children and adolescents.

Other Risks Of Sleeping Pills

Drug tolerance. You may, over a period of time, build up a tolerance to sleep aids, and you will have to take more and more for them to work, which in turn can lead to more side effects.

Drug dependence. You may come to rely on sleeping pills to sleep, and will be unable to sleep or have even worse sleep without them. Prescription pills, in particular, can be very addictive, making it difficult to stop taking them.

Withdrawal symptoms. If you stop the medication abruptly, you may have withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, and shaking.

Drug interactions. Sleeping pills can interact with other medications. This can worsen side effects and sometimes be dangerous, especially with prescription painkillers and other sedatives.

Rebound insomnia. If you need to stop taking sleeping pills, sometimes the insomnia can become even worse than before.

Masking an underlying problem. There may be an underlying medical or mental disorder, or even a sleep disorder, causing your insomnia that cant be treated with sleeping pills.

Sedative-hypnotic medications can cause severe allergic reaction, facial swelling, memory lapses, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts or actions, and complex sleep-related behaviors like sleep-walking, sleep-driving and sleep-eating . Description Of The Intervention

The goal of treating insomnia disorder is to lessen suffering and improve daytime function. The two main treatment classes shown to be effective, at least in the short term, are psychological and pharmacological treatments although evidence is limited for longerterm effects . The type of treatment chosen should be patientguided, should take into account the particular pattern of the problem and should be evidence based .

Psychological treatments

Psychological interventions designed for insomnia, usually consisting of a package of educational, behavioural and cognitive therapy, improve insomnia. Based on extensive published evidence, including nine systematic reviews or metaanalyses, the National Institutes of Health ‘Consensus and State of the Science Statement’ concluded that a cognitive behavioural therapy package is “as effective as prescription medications are for shortterm treatment of chronic insomnia. Moreover, there are indications that the beneficial effects of CBT, in contrast to those produced by medications, may last well beyond the termination of active treatment” . The UK consensus on the treatment of insomnia also recommended that CBT should be used as firstline treatment depending on patient choice, but pointed out that this therapy may not be available, or the patient may not wish to engage in it, and therefore the choice may be a drug treatment .

Data were derived from the Depression Cohort in China study between January 2020 and September 2021, a detailed description of the DCC study design has been described elsewhere .

Study flow chart is shown in Fig. . Participants were individuals aged 1865 years, who were diagnosed with MDD by trained psychiatrists using the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview , and prescribed with antidepressant as treatment strategy by psychiatrists. At baseline, participants completed self-report questionnaires that collect information on demographic characteristics, health status and behaviors, childhood trauma, and resilience. The follow-up period was 12 weeks. At 12-week follow-up, information about medication adherence was collected. This study received ethical approval from the institutional review board of Sun Yat-sen University School of Public Health , and the study protocol was approved by the Ethical Review Boards of all the participating centers. All participants signed informed consent before entering the study.
