Even though its more common to binge eat when stressed, some people have the opposite reaction.

Over the course of just one year, Claire Goodwins life turned completely upside down.

Her twin brother moved to Russia, her sister left home on bad terms, her father moved away and became unreachable, she and her partner broke up, and she lost her job.

From October to December 2012, she lost weight rapidly.

Eating was an unnecessary expense, worry, and inconvenience, says Goodwin. My stomach had been in a knot and my heart in my throat for months.

I was so stressed, anxious, and preoccupied that I didnt feel hunger. Swallowing food made me nauseous, and tasks like cooking or doing dishes seemed overwhelming and insignificant when compared to my bigger problems, she shares with Healthline.

Though my weight loss has never been nearly as significant as Goodwins, I too struggle to maintain my appetite when Im extremely stressed.

I have generalized anxiety disorder and in moments of high stress like when I was in a one-year accelerated masters degree program and working part-time my desire to eat vanishes.

Its as though my brain cant focus on anything except the thing causing me anxiety.

Although many people binge eat or indulge in rich foods when stressed, theres a small group of people who lose their appetite during moments of high anxiety.

The process of ketosis may be enough to fuel most of your organs, but unfortunately, it is not enough to fuel one of the most important: your brain. Your brain cannot use ketones as effectively as the rest of your body, as ketones can only provide about 75% of its energy requirements. Have you ever noticed that people sometimes seem unfocused or short-tempered when they are hungry? And this is usually after not eating for just a few hours!

Your brain is so dependent on glucose that once it starts to run out and blood sugar levels decrease, you may have difficulty concentrating on what you are doing, which can then cause you to lash out at others.

Your body needs to burn a certain number of calories in order to create heat and maintain a healthy, comfortable body temperature.

In fact, even mild calorie restriction has been shown to lower core body temperature.

In a six-year controlled study of 72 middle-aged adults, those who consumed an average of 1,769 calories daily had significantly lower body temperatures than the groups who consumed 2,3002,900 calories, regardless of physical activity .

In a separate analysis of the same study, the calorie-restricted group experienced a decrease in T3 thyroid hormone levels, whereas the other groups did not. T3 is a hormone that helps maintain body temperature, among other functions .

Researchers from Brigham and Womens Hospital say their study adds to the growing body of research suggesting that having food shortly before bed is bad for the brain. Symptoms of depression and anxiety rise by 26 and 16 percent respectively after evening meals, their data shows.

The study could help explain why shift-workers and long-distance travelers are prone to neurological diseases, including dementia. The lifestyle disrupts the circadian rhythm, also known as the body clock.

Our findings provide evidence for the timing of food intake as a novel strategy to potentially minimize mood vulnerability in individuals experiencing circadian misalignment, says lead author Frank A. J. L. Scheer, Director of the Medical Chronobiology Program in the Brighams Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders, in a statement. They include people engaged in shift work, experiencing jet lag or suffering from circadian rhythm disorders.

So How Did I Get My Depressed Mother To Eat

#1: Buy Walgreens Balanced Nutritional Drink Plus. Amazingly, I managed to get my mother to drink 1-2 cans a day. One can is 350 calories. Substitutes would be Ensure Plus or Boost Plus.

If you can get your depressed family member to consume two of these 8 ounce cans, thats a good foundation of 700 calories for the day.

#2: When giving your depressed family member a beverage, include a straw. A straw guarantees more of the liquid will get consumed.

#3: Do not ask your depressed family member if they want something to eat or drink.

My father would ask this to my mother, and every single time, shed say No. Hed then give up. BIG MISTAKE.

I decided to take the bull by the horns and instead of asking if my mother wanted to eat, Id just bring the food to her mouth.

I strongly suggest that you dont even TELL your depressed family member youre going to give him or her some food or drink, because this will give them an opportunity to refuse.

Dont inform them at all of your plan. JUST DO IT: Bring them the food.

When the food is in front of them, they are likely to take a bite or sip.

My mother has always enjoyed eggs. My father would ask her if she wanted eggs. Shed say no. Hed give up.

I insisted, Dont ask. Just make her the eggs. Shell eat some once theyre cooked and in front of her.

My father at first didnt go along with this, but he eventually learned that it was true:

Once the eggs were actually prepared and placed before my mother, shed eat some.
