If we are ever faced with grief, here are some biblical ways to deal with it:

  • Trust that Gods plans for you are good regardless of what has happened or is happening

  • Surround yourself with people of faith who will help support your faith and encourage you through your grieving stages
  • Ponder more on the promises of God concerning you

Bible Verses About Denial

Denial is the first stage of grief. Many times, our first reaction is to deny the loss of a loved onea friend, a parent, a child, a spouse or even a pet.

Coming to terms with loss is one of the first steps in our grief process. Our first thought is to deny the news and hope we are imagining the whole situation. While denial is normal during the grieving process, its important to remember these Bible verses.

  • God is our protection and our strength. He always helps in times of trouble. Psalm 46:1
  • Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
  • If we endure, we will also reign with Him If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 2 Timothy 2:12

Bible Verses About Grief That May Surprise You

Grief is a state of intense sadness that is typically associated with the loss of a significant person or aspect of ones life. It is not a state that most of us embrace, because it is associated with a permanent life change accompanied by intense sadness. Why, then, does Solomon say in Ecclesiastes 7:2, It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting, for death is the destiny of everyone the living should take this to heart?

My interpretation of this verse is that we tend to think about our life in a more meaningful way at a funeral instead of a party. If this is the case, maybe grief plays and important role in our spiritual development.

You may ask, How does this occur? The purpose of this article is to examine some Bible verses that illustrate this process.

There Is Hope In The Midst Of The Grieving Process

The process of mourning and grieving the death of a loved one can be categorized into five general sections. Some people may experience all five, while others may only go through some of them. They include:

  • Denial: A reaction of shock that one has when experiencing and feeling loss. A common response in this phase might sound something like, This isnt happening! or This cant be happening!
  • Anger: Here, the emotions kick in and a wave of heartache can flood you. Its usually at this phase the why questions arise. Often, unlawful emotions can be directed at anyone in the situation, some of whom may not even be at fault.
  • Bargaining: This is a phase of regret. For example, in the case of death, one may reason that, If only we had gotten the tests earlier, she would still be here. Or, in the case of job loss, If only I had worked more overtime, they wouldve seen my value. You may try to bargain that if something happened earlier, everything would have been okay. This often leads to being upset with yourself/others and triggers the next phase.
  • Depression: In this stage, many people isolate themselves. They may need time to process everything that has happened. Emotions catch up with them and they might feel heavy and muddled. This stage could last only a couple days or years.

What Does The Bible Say About Grieving?

What Does The Bible Say About Sadness? The Bible recounts many examples of sadness as the result of the fall and applications on the different ways through which we can glorify God through our sadness or moments of depression. Note that sadness is often the direct or indirect result of sin. And because we live in a fallen world, sin and its consequences are part of life . Throughout the Psalms, we can hear David pouring out the sadness of his heart to God. Just like David, we often feel like God has abandoned us in our moments of sadness, depression, suffering, and persecution in the hands of those who reject and oppose us. David says in Psalm 13:2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and every day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?

How does that work do you think?

Dan: Yeah, if there was just one answer, we would say it, but there isnt is there? There are trigger points that bring grief, just like a sucker punch, right? Then there are times when it feels more manageable. Like Anna said, as long as we dont let that be something that makes us bitter, then we can allow God to help us in that pain.

Matt: Yeah. In a few weeks time, were going to do a talk called What does the Bible say about cancer? Its an interview that I do with a beautiful lady called, Annie. With cancer, theres a lot of grieving in some respects to be done, not necessarily because of the loss of life, but maybe the loss of a way of life.

One of the things about Annie, about having known her for years, and Id say the same about Anna, having known Anna for a little while, what you can come away with from their story is grief, loss and tragedy hits everyone, the Christian and the non-Christian alike. What you cant do is stop that. What you can do is respond. What you can do is decide how youre going to come out of it, how youre going to work through it.

Dan: Yeah, absolutely. I think thats what struck me about Annas talk, that Gods beauty and glory has shone through her as He has brought her through that experience.

Matt: I also think that God might help you to bring a difference to other people. You mentioned your mates who have experienced loss in the family. Lets talk about this from the other side.

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light .

Ministering To Those Struggling With Grief

Grieving is a difficult process. Someone experiences a deep loss but also need to process all of the changes that accompany the loss. Working through these changes can extend and intensify the grief process. As well as all the emotions that accompany grief.

Helping someone through this process can build up, bring comfort, provide encouragement and hope. When comforting someone who just experienced a loss, communicate sympathy and support. Provide small acts of kindness to those who are struggling to handle the everyday responsibilities in addition to the emotional impact of the loss.

Renewed hope and healing can powerfully impact those experiencing pain and sorrow. Paul wrote that God is the God of all comfort. God does not comfort sparing but abundantly.

Just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

    Does God Get Sad

Gods emotions are rooted in His holy nature. His emotions are so complex, theyre far above human ability to understand fully. God has no mood swings. As the Creator, He views the happenings on earth in ways that no created being can. He sees the devastation of sin and sadness. He feels anger and grief, but its different from our emotions. Thats not to say that God doesnt understand our sadness or condemn us for it. He knows all the intricate details of each situation. He sees the effects of sin and sadness we experience from the vantage point of eternity. The Creator of the universe is all knowing and all loving.

    • But you, my Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy you are very patient and full of faithful love.

God showed us His love by sending Jesus, to take away the sins of the world. Jesus sacrifice on the cross was the ultimate demonstration of Gods love for you.

Physical Emotional And Spiritual Effects Of Grief

During a time of grief, a persons health can suffer. Often the stress of grief will cause someone to lose their appetite. Unless they make a deliberate effort to eat and drink or someone reminds them to do the same, they can feel light headed, faint, or suffer life threatening illness. This makes it important to have someone who can help in this situation unfortunately for Job, his wife was not the person.

Jobs wife demonstrates that during times of grief, emotions are heightened and people will often turn on each other. They may argue, blame each other, or even go as far as fight. Despite the lack of support from the one person Job should have been able to trust, Job said nothing sinful . With no support from his wife, Job continued to suffer in his grief.

The next thing Job knows, three friends come to mourn with him and try to comfort him . Despite their best efforts, Jobs friends go through the motions, but end up spending seven days and nights saying nothing because they saw that Jobs grief was intense .

As people mourn, their friends are heartbroken over their grief, but they are afraid to say anything. They do not realize however, that often silence while remaining at their friends side is the only thing they can do that helps. In the Biblical account we see that before long as Job spirals down into depression, his friends try to comfort Job with advice. Unfortunately, we find that Jobs friends do not provide advice based on the wisdom of Gods Word .
