MINDFUL SELF-COMPASSION

Mondays 1:00-2:30 pm Online

Self-compassion involves being warm and understanding toward ourselves when we suffer, fail, or feel inadequate. Self-compassion is the opposite of ignoring our pain or punishing ourselves with self-judgment. Research suggest that the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion can help people regulate emotions, engage in healthy self-care, and respond to adversity in resilient ways. This group will help students learn the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion in order to cope with stress, anxiety, depression, and life challenges in healthy and balanced ways.

New York Divorce Support Groups

You’re having a rough time handling your separation or divorce. Your family and friends are naturally sympathetic. Initially that’s ok, but eventually you are going to want or need more support than that. You may choose to seek therapy, and that’s a good option. Sometimes you may need just to talk to someone who is in the same situation as you. Your answer might be with a support group. Various organizations have support groups for separated and divorced people. Some are religious, others are non sectarian. Some are social, others are emotional. These groups can be a good place to find support, compassion and companionship from people who know first hand what you’re going through. One word of caution concerning support groups, they are not therapists, and everybody’s situation is different. They should be there to offer support, not advice. Always get your advice from an attorney.

Where To Turn If Covid

WKBW 7 News Buffalo Latest Headlines | December 16, 12am

Anxiety and depression are treatable. Mental health counselors and support organizations can help.

It will become important for many to go beyond the boundaries of a small social circle of loved ones to limit the anxiety and depression that can come with these pandemic days.

They will need help from a professional, maybe for the first time.

If so, you wont be alone. Univera Healthcare this month released a study that showed 40% of members who used telehealth in recent years did so to connect for mental health support.

When is it time to seek extra support?

When you have a growing inability to get through your day.

If you are sleeping way too much or not sleeping at all, psychotherapist Kathy Calabrese said. If you are not eating or eating way too much. If you aren’t showering or you’re not practicing the minimal amount of self-care.

If you find yourself incredibly angry and you’re beginning to strike out verbally, even physically, that’s a clear sign, she added. I call it reactive anger. The anxiety level is sky high and you need help.

Calabrese suggested starting with Mental Health Advocates of Western New York, formerly the Erie County Mental Health Association. The nonprofit agency provides information for those who can use a lift, as well as their families. Staff also is available weekdays by phone at 886-1242.

Another signal you can use some help: If a loved one expresses concern.

What Is Group Counseling

Group counseling is a natural extension of the way you live your daily life, interacting with others. But instead of talking to your family, social networks or classes, you talk with similar students and with counselors who can help.

Learn from Others

During group counseling, you will likely find that you have a lot in common with other group members, and that other people may have the same types of difficulties that you are facing. We work hard to create a strong level of trust, so everyone in the group can talk openly and honestly.

What You Can Expect

A typical group includes 6-12 students and 1-2 therapists, and meets once per week. Under the skilled direction of the group therapists, the group is able to give support, and offer alternative perspectives and new skills. By following this process, you can address your concerns, learn alternative behaviors, and develop new ways of relating to people.

You Decide How Much to Share

How much you talk about yourself depends upon what you are comfortable with. You control what you share with the group in fact, we encourage you not to share until youre ready. Group leaders are there to help develop a safe environment and facilitate the conversation.

Nysba Women’s Support Group

The New York State Bar Association Lawyer Assistance Program and the Women in Law Section facilitate a Womens Support Group taking place on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, beginning at 5:30 . The Group will be facilitated by Susan Klemme, LMSW and will meet via Zoom. The confidential group will be a place of connection and community, support and safety for women in the profession, from law school through retirement. It is open to anyone who identifies as female and wishes to connect with others to discuss issues relative to their experiences as a woman in the profession. Discussion and participation by attendees are encouraged to ensure the conversation centers on topics that those involved are seeking to explore. Looking forward to seeing you then. Questions? Email Stacey Whiteley, LAP Director at .

Participation in counseling is private and confidential as permitted by law. In fact, counselors are under ethical and legal obligations not to release confidential information.

Unless the student provides written permission:

  • Counselors will not provide anyone with information about a student, and will not let others know that a student is in counseling

The only exceptions to sharing information about a student in counseling are those rare times when it is clear that a persons life is in danger, when a child appears to be in danger of being harmed, or when the information is required by a court of law within the United States. We encourage students to discuss any concerns they have about confidentiality with their counselor.
