Causes Of Crippling Depression
Depression may be a response to traumatic events, such as the death of a closed one, a breakup, or the loss of your job. However, in most people, depression results in inexplicable feelings, and may not have a specific event that triggers it.
For these people, the chemicals in their brains may be imbalanced, and specific neurotransmitters and their deficiencies could lead to their depression.
Serotonin is the neurotransmitter predominantly associated with emotions and well-being. Inadequate levels of serotonin may lead to a lack of pleasure being derived from previously appealing activities. This imbalance is also why people have a loss of appetite and libido seen in depression. It is also associated with sleep disturbances.
Another neurotransmitter implicated in depression is noradrenaline. This neurotransmitter is associated with arousal and attention, and when they are increased through medication, it can lead to an improved mood. Finally, low levels of dopamine also contribute to depressive symptoms.

Mania Distinguishes Manic Depression From Depression
Mania is the distinguishing symptom of bipolar disorder and what differentiates it from clinical depression. A person with bipolar disorder has experienced one or more manic episodes . Whats a manic episode?
- Feeling overly happy, excited or confident
- Feeling extremely irritable, aggressive and wired
- Having uncontrollable racing thoughts or speech
- Thinking of yourself as overly important, gifted or special
- Making poor judgments, such as with money, relationships or gambling
- Engaging in risky behavior or taking more risks than you ordinarily would
A person with is experiencing the lesser form of mania hypomania may only experience a few of these symptoms, or their symptoms are far less severe and life-impairing. A person with clinical depression experiences none of these symptoms.
Depression isnt the only disorder that is confused with bipolar disorder. Especially in children and teens, sometimes other disorders such as attention deficit disorder may be misdiagnosed, when the teen may instead be suffering from a form of bipolar disorder. Thats because children and teens with bipolar disorder may display hyperactive behavior a common symptom of ADHD. Teens with bipolar disorder are especially more likely to engage in antisocial or risky behaviors, such as those involving sex, alcohol, or drugs.

Crippling Depression And Major Depressive Disorder: What Is The Difference
There is no difference between crippling depression and major depressive disorder, according to mental health professionals and individuals with depression. Many people use the term crippling depression to indicate how debilitating the condition can be.
Many times, people with certain mental health disorders do not know how to describe their condition. Hence, they resort to unofficial and colloquial phrases to communicate the adverse effects of their symptoms. Crippling depression is the ideal example of such happenings.
Most people suffer from moderate depression, which does not severely impact their day-to-day functioning, but they meet the criteria for major depressive disorder. Some people experience depression that is severe enough to keep them from daily functioning at home and work or school. Crippling depression is often used to describe the latter.
Those with severe depression mention that the disorder is crippling. However, this adjective is used in a derogatory sense to describe people with physical difficulties. Therefore, it is best to use more official, politically correct, and clinical terms, such as major depressive disorder, or adjectives like debilitating, disabling, overwhelming, and devastating.

I Cant Get Out Of Bed: Crippling Depression And Me
I didnt get out of bed the other day. It was a Wednesday, which meant I had to call in sick to work. More than a few times that day I worried Id lose my job. Was I actually sick? If I wasnt, that means I lied. Thinking about that made me feel even worse. Eventually I cried about that, which ended up making me feel even worse.
This wasnt boredom. It wasnt just me feeling lazy, or like Id rather not work that day because of some stupid report I had to do, or because there was a person I didnt want to talk to. Days like that I always ended up rolling out of bed and doing what I had to.
I know it might be hard to understand because I didnt understand it at one point. One time when someone told me they were depressed I said something like, We should just do something fun! They were my friend, so it wasnt like I was being mean, or trying to hurt them. I really did want to help.
Ive felt the kind of sadness that could be nudged aside by doing something fun. This isnt that. If someone managed to get me out of bed that morning and put me on a roller coaster it wouldnt have mattered. The wind would have ruffled my hair and slid across my face and I still would have felt empty.
The scariest part is that I wondered if it would ever get better. If I could get past that emptiness and feel whole again. It made me cry again , but it also helped me realize I needed help. There was a way to fill up that emptiness inside me and to feel connected to the day again.

Despair Vs Depression Knowing The Difference
I speak to so many people who tell me of the depression they have been diagnosed with, the anti-depressants they were prescribed that left them feeling foggy, and often what I hear and see is an individual feeling misunderstood and somewhat confused due to a lack of understanding.
Depression by clinical definition is a period of 2 weeks or longer during which there is either a depressed mood, or loss of interest or pleasure that has at least four other symptoms that reflect a change in functioning, such as problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration, and self-image.
Depression is a very real, incredibly debilitating disorder that affects how people feel about themselves. It can last from a couple of weeks to months, even years. Untreated, it can lead to sleep disturbances, irritability & extremely low moods as well as a number of physical symptoms and complaints. An individual may find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning or not be able to get out of bed at all, lose interest in work, hobbies and social interactions. Living day to day becomes extremely difficult and in extreme cases, people may even contemplate suicide.
