Earlier, around in the 1840s or even before that, there was a common notion that crying is self-soothing or has a calming effect on the individual who is in distress.

It was assumed that it helps release suppressed emotions and relieves stress. Many people hold the same belief today as well and individuals, at times, do report feeling better after crying.

Graanin and colleagues published a detailed investigation of the self-soothing action of crying in Frontiers in Psychology, 2014.
