In a recent confession, when I was in a season of depression, the priest gave me a very specific penance. I was to read about Jesus walking on stormy seas, and Peters fear in Matthew 14:30-31. Then reflect, specifically, on that moment when Peter is desperately reaching out to Our Lordthat second just before Jesus takes his hand.
It was a dark and doubt-filled moment for Peter, whose faith had faltered. It was also an intuitive response to a person physically drowning reaching out, trying to grasp at anything to save his life.
Assured that the Lord had taken my hand so I will not drown, I often read this prayer, sometimes three times through!

Todays prayer is a litany against alienation and loneliness. We heard from our Old Testament reading in Isaiah, that God desires to meet the needs of his people. Today we lament the role that loneliness and isolation play in our world. We ask you, God, to restore, like rivers in the desert, that you might meet the needs of your people and that we might offer our praise to you.
After each prayer, I will say Lord in your mercy and you can respond with hear our prayer. With these prayers, we as a community ask for Gods redemptive presence in the church, world, community and individual lives. And we offer our own lives to Gods mission of healing and reconciliation in the world. Let us pray.

I know the importance of prayer for depression.
I struggle with depression on a semi-regular basis and know just how debilitating it can be.
You feel like the darkness will never lift. Like youre trapped under a cloud. That its always winter and never Christmas. That youre walking around in a constant fog of gloom and doom. Depression is a terrible companion. It sucks the life out of you.

But heres the rub. When Im depressed, its much harder to pray. I feel so low that I dont even know what to pray. I need guidance and direction. I need help when it comes to prayer for depression.
The remedy? I need to know whatto pray beforehand. Before Im in the gloom of depression. Before Im stuck in the mire of despair.
