Brain scans alone cannot be used to diagnose a mental disorder, such as autism, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. In some cases, a brain scan might be used to rule out other medical illnesses, such as a tumor, that could cause symptoms similar to a mental disorder, such as depression.

In the second study, scientists used MRI techniques to look for depression-related abnormalities in the connectome the web of neural connections in the brain.
Researchers from the Image Display, Enhancement, and Analysis group at the University of North Carolina say that people with major depression had abnormal patterns of excitation and inhibition at the dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex of the brain.

What Is A Ct Scan With Contrast
In a CT scan, dense substances like bones are easy to see. But soft tissues donât show up as well. They may look faint in the image. To help them appear clearly, you may need a special dye called a contrast material. They block the X-rays and appear white on the scan, highlighting blood vessels, organs, or other structures.
Contrast materials are usually made of iodine or barium sulfate. You might receive these drugs in one or more of three ways:
- Injection: The drugs are injected directly into a vein. This is done to help your blood vessels, urinary tract, liver, or gallbladder stand out in the image.
- Orally: Drinking a liquid with the contrast material can enhance scans of your digestive tract, the pathway of food through your body.
- Enema: If your intestines are being scanned, the contrast material can be inserted in your rectum.
After the CT scan, youâll need to drink plenty of fluids to help your kidneys remove the contrast material from your body.
From Voxels To Discoveries: Analyzing Brain Imaging Data
An fMRI scan results in a three-dimensional image made up of voxels, or 3-D pixels. Each voxel represents a volume in the brain about 2-3 cubic millimeters in sizepretty small, but big enough to contain hundreds of thousands of neurons. With fMRI, the scanner takes one image every two seconds or so, resulting in a time series of brain images, each with hundreds of thousands of voxels. Each voxel for each time point has a particular level of activity. This activity is Blood Oxygenation-Level Dependent, meaning more oxygen leads to greater signal, so it goes by the name BOLD.
However, this time series isnt ready to be published as a pretty picture yet. There are differences from one image in the time series to the next that arent caused just by changes in brain activity. This can be due to the participant moving in the scanner or even just due to normal breathing. If this isnt fixed before the images are combined, then a voxel thats in brain area A in one image could be in brain area B in another image! A computer program aligns all the images so they are lined up and can be compared across time.

Missed Opportunities In Psychiatric Neuroimaging
As members of the International Society of Applied Neuroimaging , we cannot agree with the position of the APA. Our clinical experience as psychiatrists, neuroimaging specialists, nuclear medicine physicians, and experienced general practitioners is that functional neuroimaging, using SPECT and/or PET functional imaging, provides valuable insights into patient diagnosis. We will now summarize the data that support the use of SPECT and/or PET functional neuroimaging in the diagnostic process, as well as in the treatment monitoring process. In addition, we will demonstrate how other pathophysiological processes can masquerade as psychiatric conditions. Only by correctly determining the absence of these confounding pathophysiological processes can treatment be maximally effective.
Ultimately, we will demonstrate that functional brain imaging with PET and SPECT has already proven itself valuable in the psychiatric treatment of individual patients, and we will illustrate how it can contribute to the advancement of the field, going forward.

What Can Brain Imaging Tell Us About A Single Person
New discoveries about brain functions and disorders are made using brain imaging every day. These findings tell us how most people use different brain areas, or how people with a particular disorder differ from people without that disorder as a group. However, it has been extremely difficult to use brain imaging to tell us information about a single person. So as we mentioned in the previous paragraph, people with depression process emotions differently than non-depressed people, on average. But we havent been able to pinpoint whether one specific person processes emotions differently enough that theyre probably depressed.
As mentioned earlier, some of the difficulty is due to BOLD activations being relatively small, so researchers need to collect data from 20 or 30 participants and average their results together in order to see any effects. Other issues arise from the computational challenges of brain imagingeach image can be made up of 100,000 voxels, so doing statistical analyses on these data have historically taken powerful computers a long time.
Functional Mri For The Assessment Of Mdd
Functional brain imaging, which measures blood flow and metabolism, is usually combined with anatomical imaging modalities, such as MRI or CT, to visualize the activation of specific brain regions. Nearly all fMRI studies utilize blood oxygenation level-dependent fMRI for assessing functional brain activity. In BOLD, brain activation results in increased consumption of oxygen, which increases the inflow of oxygenated blood and leads to an elevated BOLD signal. In return, BOLD allows for regional and global mapping of brain regions activated during non-task and task-related activities. As patients produce prototypical activation patterns, different patterns are found in patients at rest and those performing task-related activities.
