He Will Give You Strength When You Feel Powerless

Bible Verse How to Overcome Depression

So do not fear, for I am with you do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

Some days you might feel like you have lost all your strength. That the world could go on perfectly fine without you. Remeber: You are loved and wanted by a God bigger than the entire universe.

When you are feeling lonely, anxious, or depressed look to our Heavenly Father, for He will give you the strength you need to keep going.

Turn To God When Times Are Tough

During the pandemic, global depression increased significantly. Many people lost loved ones, livelihoods, and struggled with months of isolation during lockdowns.

Major depression differs from sadness in that it can be more severe and can last much longer. It’s quite normal to experience grief and anxiety after a major loss in our life.

Many Christians will turn to the Word of God for support during times of crisis. In really dark times, Psalm 23:4 can provide the most comfort: âEven though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me your rod and your staff, they comfort me.â

Turning to the Holy Spirit can give you the strength and hope to get through these tough periods.

Another lesson we may learn from this text is to seek assistance. While we depend on the Great Physician and professional help to deal with depression we have to be open. We need to express ourselves openly to work through our emotions. Otherwise we will only be harming ourselves and weakening the prospects of getting better.

It’s more helpful when we talk about our burdens and troubles rather than hide what we are going through.

Stage : Despair Can Lead To Destruction

When despair has taken hold, destructive choices often result. You want to feel alive and in control again. You want comfort and escape. These four common escapes become a temptation to those in despair:

Escape in Relationships Sometimes we run to relationships and sometimes we run from them in the midst of depression. In deep despair and depression, we easily distort what is really happening in the relationships around us. Unhealthy relationships and broken relationships often occur in the context of depression, which tempts us to ignore warning signs that we may otherwise see. Adultery is often preceded first by depression, and those seeking it are often seeking it to feel alive. Divorce is often preceded by depression as well.

Escape into Substances There is a high correlation between depression and destructive substance abuse. We want comfort and can find temporary relief in a bottle, pill container, or sugar rush. These provide only a brief respite from the pain. We know that substances dont work long term, but the allure of substances is the short-term relief they offer.

Escape into Isolation One of the common responses to the pain of despair is the desire to be alone. Those who are severely depressed often convince themselves that this is the only way forward. They desire help, but seem to be too frustrated and tired to seek it. One of the best things their friends can do is to come near and faithfully show concern and care.

A Psalm For The Waiting Heart

I waited patiently for the LORD he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. Psalm 40:1-3

Seasons of depression go by slower than other seasons of life. The days linger and the nights seem to never end. But the psalmist here reminds us that God pulls us up out of that terrible place and gives us steady ground to stand on. When we feel like the night will never end, this gives us fresh hope to rise up with a new song for a new day.

How I Found Hope In Depression

I was that person the one who condescendingly said about people dealing with depression, They just need to get over it. It is so very true that pride goes before a fall. Without going into too much detail, lets just say that soon thereafter, I would battle this exact difficulty for several years.

While I knew the bible verses for depression mentioned below, I didnt know how much I would need to cling to them.

Ive been hesitant to write this post. Why? Because of the stigma attached to mental illness. As Christians, perhaps our honesty can help to end some of this stigma.

This post is not meant to be a sob story about what I went through. In fact, I dont want that to be the focus at all! I want the focus to be on the light, the light that is most assuredly at the end of the dark tunnel.

To those readers dealing with depression and/or anxiety, I want to give you hope! There is so much hope, more than you think possible.

*Important note:

Please know that while grounding yourself in these bible verses for depression gives you confidence, it wont necessarily change the way you are feeling. It is paramount for those dealing with depression to seek treatment from a health care professional and/or therapist. There are often neurotransmitter imbalances at play that need to be attended to.
