It’s probably what stays with me the most â that I need to think of recovery as a long-term process and not a one-off result.

My depression is a condition that needs to be managed as opposed to a spell of poor health .

There will be better days and good days, not-so-great days and bad days. In any order.

A bad day is just a blip â it doesn’t undo all my efforts to manage my condition it does not wipe me back to zero with a fail mark. Even if it sometimes feels like that.

“Think about blips and how you respond to them,” said the psych registrar on the day I was discharged.

“Compare the blip to previous worsts. Are you catastrophising? Can you see things as setbacks, not failures?”

When you expect to fail, it often happens that you stop taking action to help yourself recover. The deeply ingrained habits of depressive thinking and belief can quickly take over. You might start making rules and setting goals.

If recovery is not total and permanent, its not recovery. Treatments cant fail, relapse cant happen. You cant be recovered if youre still on medication. You have to get better in six months or a year, or some fixed period of time.
