How To Find Angle Of Depression

Define Angle Of Depression:

Find the angle of depression using trigonometry

Now, the basic definition of the depression angle is the angle formed between the horizontal plane of the observer and the line of sight. This line of sight refers to the unobstructed vision or a line that connects both the observer and the object. The angle of depression is a potent tool in solving our everyday problems. It is used in trigonometric applications to calculate the distance between the observer and the object if the height and the angle of depression are known to us. So, in the example below, the angle 2, which is formed by the horizontal and the line of sight, is the depression angle.

Angle Of Depression Explanation & Examples

When you look at an item below you, you can easily measure the angle of depression formed by your line of sight with the horizontal line. Just imagine you are standing at the top of the Pisa Tower and looking at an infinite horizon to enjoy the beautiful weather on a great rainy day. Suddenly your friend, on the ground, accidentally finds you and screams to say Hi. You lower your eyes to look to see your friend. You must realize that you created a certain angle as you look downwards toward your friend. This angle is called the angle of depression.

The angle of depression is basically the measure of an angle between the horizontal line and line of sight of a persons eyes to any item below. The angle of elevation depends upon the movement of your eyes.

After this lesson, we expect you to learn the concepts of the angle of depression and be able to confidently answer the following questions:

  • What is an angle of depression?
  • How to find the angle of depression?
  • How can we solve real-world problems using the angle of depression?

What Is an Angle of Depression?

When an observer is looking below at an object, the angle established by the line of sight with the horizontal line is called the angle of depression.

Now, if the man is looking at the base of the wall, what should be the line of sight?

Looking at Figure 11-2, the angle $\theta$ represents the angle of depression.

Finding The Angles Of Elevation & Depression

Let’s look again at our pilot and ground crewmember. We can create a right triangle with the pilot at the top of the short side, the crewmember at the far end of the long side, and a hypotenuse stretching between them. The long side is the ground crewmember’s horizon line. The short side is the right angle straight up to the pilot.

The height from the crewmember’s horizon line to the pilot’s eyes is our opposite side, and the adjacent side is the distance from that side to the ground crewmember. We know the height of the opposite side, from basic subtraction of the pilot’s and the ground crewmember’s eye positions above the tarmac:

7.13

So the pilot is having to look down only 12.25 below horizontal, and the ground crewmember is looking up only 12.25 ° above horizontal, to see each other.

If you know the angle of depression , you can calculate distances using tangent.

If you know the heights and lengths of the two legs of the right triangle, you can calculate the angle of depression using the inverse of tangent, arctangent.

What Is An Angle Of Depression

In contrast to the angle of elevation, the angle of depression is the angle at which you would draw a line from a point on a horizontal line to intersect another point that falls below the line. Using the x-axis example from before, the angle of depression would require you to choose a point on the x-axis and draw a line from it to another point that was somewhere below the x-axis. The angle of that line in comparison to the x-axis itself would be the angle of depression. In the bird scenario, imagine the bird itself flying along an imaginary horizontal plane. The angle that the bird would look along to look down and see you standing on the ground would be the angle of depression.

What Is An Angle Of Elevation

The angle of elevation of a point or object is the angle at which you would draw a line to intersect the point from a single point on a horizontal line. If you were to pick a point on the x-axis of a grid and draw a line from that point to another point somewhere above the x-axis, the angle of that line in comparison to the x-axis itself would be the angle of elevation. In a real-world scenario, the angle of elevation could be viewed as the angle you would look at compared to the ground around you when you look up into the sky to see a bird flying.

The term known as angle of depression means our sight when we are looking downwards in a horizontal angle. Lets take an example over here, suppose you are standing in your room and looking at something on the floor that is around 3 ft. away from you.

It could be a coin that fell on the floor or a ball. When you are looking down, imagine there is a line which forms between you and the object. This is known as the line of sign that is of course imaginary but represents the angle of your sight.

There are different angles as if we suppose that someone is coming towards you and you are looking towards him/her then would the angle remain the same? Nom it wont as it will become a straight line. The change is not only about the up and or down, every angle is different. But, when you are looking at something just like our example of a fallen object that specific angle is known as the angle of depression.

If we take an example of the same scenario with the only difference, the fallen object is looking up to you. This type of specific angle is called the angle of elevation. They are both different angles so we can call them x and y.

Distance Between 2 Ships (Angle of Depression)

Since we now know what the angle of depression is, let’s learn how to find it! We can determine the angle of depression using surveying equipment like an engineer’s transit or a clinometer. These devices are optical instruments that have angle-measurement features and can instantly give us the angle that we need. However, we can also use mathematics to find the angle of depression. But first, we need to know two distances: the horizontal distance between the viewer and the object, and their vertical distance, as shown in the illustration below:

If you already have the values of these measurements, you can now input them into our angle of depression calculator. To do it manually, substitute these values in the angle of depression formula which is derived from the arctangent function in trigonometry.

We use the arctangent function because, if we look closer at the dimensions concerned, we can see that we have actually formed a right triangle, and that we are dealing with the sides adjacent and opposite to the angle we are interested in. With that said, below is the angle of depression formula:

angle of depression = arctan

Angle Of Depression Definition

The angle of depression is the angle between the horizontal line and the observation of the object from the horizontal line. It is basically used to get the distance of the two objects where the angles and an objects distance from the ground are known to us. Its an angle that is formed with the horizontal line if the line of sight is downward from the horizontal line.

If the object observed by the observer is below the level of the observer, then the angle formed between the horizontal line and the observers line of sight is called the angle of depression. In the below figure, is the angle of depression.

Also to know is, how do you find the angle of elevation?

Find the angle of elevation of the plane from point A on the ground.

  • Step 1 The two sides we know are Opposite and Adjacent .
  • Step 2 SOHCAHTOA tells us we must use Tangent.
  • Step 3 Calculate Opposite/Adjacent = 300/400 = 0.75.
  • Step 4 Find the angle from your calculator using tan-1
  • how do you find angle of depression with distance? The angle of depression may be found by using this formula: tan y = opposite/adjacent. The opposite side in this case is usually the height of the observer or height in terms of location, for example, the height of a plane in the air. The adjacent is usually the horizontal distance between the object and the observer.

Then, how do you find the measure of an angle?

Using a ProtractorThe best way to measure an angle is to use a protractor. To do this, you’ll start by lining up one ray along the 0-degree line on the protractor. Then, line up the vertex with the midpoint of the protractor. Follow the second ray to determine the angle’s measurement to the nearest degree.

What is an angle of elevation?

The term angle of elevation denotes the angle from the horizontal upward to an object. An observer’s line of sight would be above the horizontal. The term angle of depression denotes the angle from the horizontal downward to an object.

    Angle Of Elevation Definition

The angle of elevation is an angle that is formed between the horizontal line and the line of sight. If the line of sight is upward from the horizontal line, then the angle formed is an angle of elevation.

In the above figure, you can see, an observer is looking at the object, standing on the ground, forming an angle with the line of sight and horizontal line. Here, if we join an imaginary line between the object and end of the horizontal line, a right angle triangle is formed. Thus we can use here trigonometry concept to find the distance of the observer from the tower or building. Height of the tower or building or the height at which the object is kept will be considered as perpendicular and the horizontal line will be considered as adjacent side of the triangle formed. The related terminology are given here.

So weve become experts in finding and sketching angles and reference triangles, but what are they good for?

How do people use Reference Angles and Triangles in real life?

Right Triangles are used in all types of architecture. You see them every time you climb stairs, look at a roof, or cross over a bridge.

You see triangles in kites, skateboard ramps, street signs, airplanes, sailboats, and even mountains.

And, havent you ever eaten a sandwich that was first cut into two triangles? Mmmmm, food!

    Gosh, triangles are everywhere!

Did you know that you create triangles and use math with your eyes every single day!

Every time you look up at something in the sky, you are creating something called the Angle of Elevation with your eyes. Moreover, when you look down at something on the ground, you are creating an angle called Angle of Depression.

    Neat!

    Angle of Elevation

Well, trigonometric functions are used to calculate distances by finding an angle determined by a horizontal and a line of sight .

When we elevate our eyes to look up at the top of a building or see a bird in the sky we create an angle with the ground that we can then use to calculate the height or even the distance away from whatever it is we are looking toward. You never know when you might need to calculate the height of a saguaro cactus while driving through Arizona, as Purple Math beautifully illustrates.
