  • Symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder generally show up a week or so before your period starts. Along with depression symptoms, you might experience anxiety or nervousness, paranoia, or panic. Some people also have a sense of general overwhelm, or feel as if theyre losing control.
  • Perinatal depression involves episodes of depression that might begin during pregnancy or anytime in the first year after childbirth. It can involve worries about your ability to care for your child and intrusive thoughts about harming yourself or your child. You might also struggle to bond with your child.
  • Depression symptoms can also develop along with perimenopause, or the transitional period before menopause. You might feel very tearful, lose interest in your usual activities, and find it difficult to manage ordinary stressors.

When To Seek Professional Help

Why Do I Feel Depressed

Sometimes there is a direct cause for feeling depressed. This could be a life event, a circumstance or simply feeling lonely and depressed. Most times, depressed feelings begin due to a stressor. Example stressors that might make someone feel depressed include:

  • Stress at home, work or school
  • Moving
  • Death of a loved one
  • Social disruption
  • Being diagnosed with an illness

Sometimes knowing why you feel depressed can help begin the process of relieving the depression. If, for example, you feel depressed because of the loss of a friendship, it may be helpful to spend time with other friends and talk about thatevent’s impact.

Sometimes people feel depressed for no reason. This happens more often in people with severe or chronic depression. However, even if feeling depressed for no reason, you can still take action to try and stop the depression.

Am I Low Or Depressed

We all use different language to talk about our feelings. You have probably heard people say they are depressed or have depression but what does that mean?

The word depression is used by medical doctors to describe a particular state of low mood with symptoms, for a certain period of time. Things get confusing because the word depression is used very often these days outside of this medical definition.

Whatever language you choose to describe how youre feeling, its good to think about whats getting you down. Also, what you could do to look after yourself. Then, think about whether you want or need help from others, like a friend, Jigsaw, or a doctor.

What If I Am Not Happy With My Treatment

If you are not happy with your treatment you can:

  • talk to your doctor to see if they can suggest changes,
  • get an advocate to help you speak your doctor,
  • ask for a second opinion if you feel it would help,
  • contact Patient Advice and Liaison Service and see whether they can help, or
  • make a complaint.

There is more information about these options below.

Talk to your doctor about your treatment to see if you can resolve the problem with them first. When something negative happens in your life, it can seem like your world is ending. But instead of suppressing or dismissing your emotionseither by distracting yourself or keeping up a good frontyou should actually embrace them. All emotions are important to experience and have valuable information for us about our lives, says Dr. Lori Rockmore, Psy.D. In fact, a 2017 study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology concluded individuals who accept rather than judge their mental experiences may attain better psychological health, in part because acceptance helps them experience less negative emotion in response to stressors.

Instead of beating yourself up for feeling down, try to consider this as an opportunity to learn, grow, and find true healing, says Briana Borten, CEO of the wellness organization Dragontree.

Find What Does Make You Happy

Consider this the opposite of crashing: Instead of embracing weepy, tearjerkers, pick out an uplifting read, put on some happy tunes, or watch a few feel-good films, suggests McMillan. Alternatively, you could engage in an activity or hobby you truly enjoy, whether that’s volunteering, working on a challenging jigsaw puzzle, or tending to your lush gardens.

Even better? Doing something that’ll make you laugh . “Laughing in response to pain and sadness can be a terrific coping mechanism,” says Bellace, adding, “Laughter releases endorphins similar to exercise, reduces the stress hormone cortisol, and increases dopamine .” Of course, the grieving process takes time, “so there is no shame in not wanting to laugh for a while,” assures Bellace.

Signs Of Walking Depression

I once read that succumbing to depression doesnt mean you are weak, but that you have been trying to be strong for too long, which is maybe a form of denial. So much of life happens somewhere in between being okay and complete breakdownthats where many of us live, and doing so requires strength. ~ novelist Matthew Quick

Walking depression can be hard to recognize because it doesnt fit the more common picture of severe depression. But it can be just as dangerous to our well-being when left unacknowledged.

This list isnt meant to be exhaustive or to diagnose anyone. But these are some of the signs Ive observed in myself and those Ive coached:

Nothing is fun. You root around for something to look forward to and come up empty.

You cant find flow. Working on your creative projects feels like a grind, but you keep plodding away. There is research that shows that neuroticism is associated with lower rates of flow.

Your energy is low. Maybe youre not getting enough rest because youre too anxious to sleep, or youre trying to cram too many tasks into a day, or youre punishing yourself by staying up. Whatever the reason, you are effin tired.

You feel worse in the morning and better at night. I remember explaining this to a friend, who found it mystifying. In the morning I felt the crushing weight of all the things I had to do that day. In the evening I was temporarily free from expectations and could enjoy a moments respite.

Low Blood Sugar Levels

There is a direct link between mood and blood glucose balance. This is part of our survival system humans and animals get very unhappy when their blood sugar is low. This mechanism is designed to make finding food a priority. While you sleep, your blood sugar progressively drops. The reason for this is that you havent eaten anything during the night and your bodys alarm system goes off as you are waking in the morning.

Offer To Help With Everyday Tasks

What to Do When Feeling Lonely and Depressed

With depression, day-to-day tasks can feel overwhelming. Things like laundry, grocery shopping, or paying bills can begin to pile up, making it hard to know where to start.

Your friend may appreciate an offer of help, but they also might not be able to clearly say what they need help with.

So, instead of saying Let me know if theres anything I can do, consider saying, What do you most need help with today?

If you notice their refrigerator is empty, say Can I take you grocery shopping, or pick up what you need if you write me a list? or Lets go get some groceries and cook dinner together.

If your friend is behind on dishes, laundry, or other household chores, offer to come over, put some music on, and tackle a specific task together. Simply having company can make the work seem less daunting.

Diffuse Some Essential Oils

You know how the smell of a fresh bouquet of flowers can bring a smile to your face? Or the smell of a fresh apple pie can make you feel all warm and cozy inside?

Scents have a serious power to affect the way that we feel. Our nose detects scents which then sends triggers to our brain that activate our limbic system. The limbic system is the part of the brain that deals with emotions, memories, and arousal. This means that when we smell good things it can cause our brain to feel good feelings.

You can literally just open up a bottle of your favorite essential oil, hold it under your nose and start sniffing, but a slightly more efficient option would be to diffuse the oils so you can go about your day without an oily bottle in your hand. I have two of these diffusers in my house and they are affordable and have worked great for years. I also have these diffuser clips for my car so that I can have my smelly goodness while I drive.

My favorite oils to use are from Plant Therapy. They are safe, effective, and much more affordable than a lot of other brands out there. I love that they take oil safety very seriously and provide a lot of education on their blog about truly safe uses for oils. They also have a KidSafe line of oils to help you ensure that the oils you are using around your kids are safe for their small bodies.

Here are some great options to diffuse when youre feeling low:
