What Is An Eating Problem

An eating problem is any relationship with food that you find difficult.

Many people think that someone with an eating problem will be over or underweight. People might also think that certain weights are linked to certain eating problems. Neither of these points are true.

Anyone can experience eating problems. This is regardless of age, gender, weight or background.

Food plays a significant part in our lives. Most of us will spend time thinking about what we eat. Sometimes you might:

Changing your eating habits like this every now and again is normal.

But if you feel like food and eating is taking over your life, it may become a problem.

Depression Treatment: How To Help Yourself

In addition to the help and support you get from your therapist and/or doctor, there are a few things you can do on your own that will help you feel better:

  • Stay physically active. Exercise helps boost your mood, and research has shown that it may also help ease depression.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. Sleep helps us heal from many health problems, including depression. Getting the right amount of sleep, but not too much, helps you have more energy. Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. Make your bedroom a comfortable place for sleeping and sex only — banish TV and use curtains to keep out bright outdoor light.
  • Stay connected. Spending time with supportive friends or family will make you feel better — even if you don’t feel like it will. It may help to choose low-key ways to connect. Go to a light-hearted movie, meet for a coffee and some people-watching, or take a walk in a nearby park. The contact you get from others, along with depression treatment, can help bring you out of the dark and back into the light.

Trap #: Negative Thinking

When you’re depressed, you’re prone to negative thinking and talking yourself out of trying new things.

You might say to yourself, “Well, even if I did A, B, and C, it probably wouldn’t make me feel any better and it would be a real hassle, so why bother trying at all?”

“That’s a huge trap,” says Goulston. “If you race ahead and anticipate a negative result, which then causes you to stop trying at all, that is something that will rapidly accelerate your depression and deepen it.”

The Fix: Don’t get too attached to grim expectations. “You have more control over doing and not doing, than you have over what the result of actions will be,” Goulston says. “But there is a much greater chance that if you do, then those results will be positive.”

So How Did I Get My Depressed Mother To Eat

#1: Buy Walgreens Balanced Nutritional Drink Plus. Amazingly, I managed to get my mother to drink 1-2 cans a day. One can is 350 calories. Substitutes would be Ensure Plus or Boost Plus.

If you can get your depressed family member to consume two of these 8 ounce cans, thats a good foundation of 700 calories for the day.

#2: When giving your depressed family member a beverage, include a straw. A straw guarantees more of the liquid will get consumed.

#3: Do not ask your depressed family member if they want something to eat or drink.

My father would ask this to my mother, and every single time, shed say No. Hed then give up. BIG MISTAKE.

I decided to take the bull by the horns and instead of asking if my mother wanted to eat, Id just bring the food to her mouth.

I strongly suggest that you dont even TELL your depressed family member youre going to give him or her some food or drink, because this will give them an opportunity to refuse.

Dont inform them at all of your plan. JUST DO IT: Bring them the food.

When the food is in front of them, they are likely to take a bite or sip.

My mother has always enjoyed eggs. My father would ask her if she wanted eggs. Shed say no. Hed give up.

I insisted, Dont ask. Just make her the eggs. Shell eat some once theyre cooked and in front of her.

My father at first didnt go along with this, but he eventually learned that it was true:

Once the eggs were actually prepared and placed before my mother, shed eat some.

What To Look For
