Can Depression Be Cured Permanently

How Can I Help Someone With Depression

Can Depression Be Cured?

Helping someone with depression might not look a single way. However, things that you can do to help include encouraging treatment, listening with compassion, helping the person suffering with daily tasks, be vigilant for signs of suicidal behavior, and to make sure you are caring for yourself, too.

Fire Together Wire Together

As magnetic brain stimulation continues to be tested in the real world, researchers are considering whether to expand its use. Psychotherapy and antidepressants are highly effective treatments for many people with depression. They’re also more convenient and less expensive, so TMS is unlikely to become a first-line therapy for depression that responds to other treatment. But it has potential for treating other conditions.

Researchers have found that TMS could be effective in treating vascular depression following stroke, for example . Others are studying TMS as a possible treatment for disorders including schizophrenia, attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. “Following the success with depression, almost everybody who treats brain diseases is thinking about whether you could use TMS,” George says.

So far, however, the results are mixed. “The one exception is in the treatment of pain,” George says. Data suggests TMS could be helpful in treating both acute pain and chronic pain conditions such as fibromyalgia â but to date, no companies have sought FDA approval for that use, he adds.

Meanwhile, scientists are also exploring how to engage patients in order to maximize the effectiveness of TMS during treatment for depression. “There’s a concept that says âneurons that fire together wire together,'” says George. According to this theory, brain cells might be more receptive to treatments when they’re actively engaged in some task.

Treating Schizophrenia With Medication

It can be easy to assume that any medication is a cure for an illness, but this isnt always true. With schizophrenia the medications used to treat it help to manage symptoms, but they do not cure the condition. Even though they do not provide a cure, they have an important role to play and help many people with schizophrenia get relief. Therapy alone is not enough to treat .

The medications used for schizophrenia are called antipsychotic drugs. These drugs are thought to work by acting on the neurotransmitter in the brain known as dopamine. They help relieve symptoms but can also cause side effects. The goal of using antipsychotics to treat schizophrenia is to use the lowest dose possible or the smallest combination of drugs that manage symptoms. Some patients may have to try more than one medication, or a combination of drugs, before settling on treatment that gets results with the fewest side effects.

Antipsychotics include first and second generation medications. The first generation drugs generally cause more side effects, but they are also less expensive. Second generation antipsychotics are generally preferred, as they come with less risk of serious side effects. Examples of second generation antipsychotics used to treat schizophrenia are:

  • Aripiprazole
  • Risperidone

Stanford Researchers Devise Treatment That Relieved Depression In 90% Of Participants In Small Study

Stanford Medicine researchers used high doses of magnetic stimulation, delivered on an accelerated timeline and targeted to individual neurocircuitry, to treat patients with severe depression.

In this photo, Williams and Lehman demonstrate how a patient is positioned and the equipment is used during the treatment. Steve Fisch

A new form of magnetic brain stimulation rapidly relieved symptoms of severe depression in 90% of participants in a small study conducted by researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine.

The researchers are conducting a larger, double-blinded trial in which half the participants are receiving fake treatment. The researchers are optimistic the second trial will prove to be similarly effective in treating people whose condition hasnt improved with medication, talk therapy or other forms of electromagnetic stimulation.

The treatment is called Stanford Accelerated Intelligent Neuromodulation Therapy, or SAINT. It is a form of transcranial magnetic stimulation, which is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treatment of depression. The researchers reported that the therapy improves on current FDA-approved protocols by increasing the number of magnetic pulses, speeding up the pace of the treatment and targeting the pulses according to each individuals neurocircuitry.

The Depression Epidemic: Our Stone Age Brains

Can depression be cured?

There is an undeniable connection between lifestyle and depression. A modern lifestyle is making us sick. The more modern a society, and the more removed it is from the primitive hunter-gatherer way of life, the higher its rate of depression. Our world has changed phenomenally and our lifestyles have changed along with it, but our brains have hardly changed at all. They remain remarkably similar to the ones that powered people in the Stone Age when sleep was abundant, food was nutritious, and people wandered in groups, constantly on the move in the sunshine.

Our Stone Age brains just werent designed to handle the sedentary, isolated, indoor, sleep-deprived, fast-food-laden, stressed-out pace of twenty-first-century life. -Dr Stephen Ilardi

Our brains are beautifully crafted to support Stone Age bodies that live Stone Age lives. When Stone Age brains are forced to live a modern lifestyle, the effect can be devastating. The brain and the body become depleted of the very things that have been fuelling them for thousands of years before now.

Helping A Suicidal Friend Or Relative

If you see any of the above warning signs in a friend or relative:

  • get professional help for them
  • let them know they are not alone and you care about them
  • offer support in finding other solutions to their problems

If you feel there’s an immediate danger, stay with the person or have someone else stay with them, and remove all available means of attempting suicide, such as medicine.

Over-the-counter medicine, such as painkillers, can be just as dangerous as prescription medicine. Also, remove sharp objects and poisonous household chemicals such as bleach.

Nutrition: Low Sugar Low Fat / Gluten Free Diet

Nutrition can play a huge role in improving mental health. If your brain is getting the nutrients that it needs, cognition and other mental processing tends to be enhanced. Most studies show that diets high in sugar and saturated fat tend to worsen symptoms and long-term prognosis among individuals with schizophrenia. It is hypothesized that high levels of sugar and saturated fat cause the brain to produce less BDNF . BDNF aids in the formation of neural connections and increases are considered beneficial for brain functioning.

Other nutritional research has shown that there may be a link between schizophrenia and celiac disease or gluten-intolerance. There have been small findings that show genetic gluten intolerance have a three-fold risk of developing schizophrenia. Although not many people end up with gluten allergies, it is hypothesized that a gluten and/or wheat free diet could be a beneficial at reducing both the symptoms and severity of schizophrenia.

Finding The Best Depression Treatment For You

When youre depressed, it can feel like youll never get out from under a dark shadow. However, even the most severe depression is treatable. So, if your depression is keeping you from living the life you want to, dont hesitate to seek help. From therapy to medication to healthy lifestyle changes, there are many different treatment options available.

Of course, just as no two people are affected by depression in exactly the same way, neither is there a one size fits all treatment to cure depression. What works for one person might not work for another. By becoming as informed as possible, though, you can find the treatments that can help you overcome depression, feel happy and hopeful again, and reclaim your life.

How Can Depression Be Treated

Early diagnosis and treatment for depression can reduce distress, as well as any risk of suicide. People with a chronic medical condition who get treatment for co-existing depression often have an improvement in their overall medical condition, achieve a better quality of life and find it easier to follow their treatment plan.

In some cases, improved treatment of the chronic medical condition will relieve the symptoms of depression that it caused. If so, specific treatment for depression may be unnecessary. Some medications can cause depression. In these cases, the best thing to do is reduce or eliminate that particular medication. However, when depression becomes a separate problem, it should be treated on its own.

The success of antidepressant treatment like any other treatment cant be guaranteed, but most people who are treated for depression will recover. Recovery is often quicker and more complete when both antidepressant medication and psychotherapy are combined. Many antidepressant medicines are available to treat depression. How these drugs work isnt fully understood, but they affect brain chemicals that are believed to be involved in depression.

Psychotherapy, or “therapy” for short, actually refers to a variety of techniques used to treat depression. Psychotherapy involves talking to a licensed professional who helps the depressed person:

Promising Signs But Proceed With Caution

Scott Krakower, DO, an assistant unit chief in the psychiatry department at Zucker Hillside Hospital in Glen Oaks, New York, sees promise in this new agent to improve quality of life and function for patients.

The current drugs arent always effective, he says. Some patients have no response, partial response, or weight gain or restlessness so its always good to have more options, provided they are safe.

Research has shown that people with schizophrenia often have trouble sticking to their treatment plan. The Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness study found that 74 percent of patients had discontinued medication within 18 months due to insufficient efficacy, intolerable side effects, or for other reasons.

If there are more agents out there that are better tolerated and there isnt weight gain, there may be more compliance, says Dr. Krakower. And that is something we are aiming for in patients with schizophrenia.

Despite the positive indications so far, Krakower also warns that the true effectiveness of the drug can only be gauged once its being used by a broader population.

Whenever any new medication comes out on the market, we have to be very cautious there is a possibility the agent wont work out, he says. Patients should still be considering all the options out there for schizophrenia and they should speak to their practitioner to decide on what is the best medication.

Why Is Depression Common In People Who Have A Chronic Illness

Depression is one of the most common complications of chronic illness. Its estimated that up to one-third of individuals with a serious medical condition have symptoms of depression.

People who have chronic illnesses must adjust to both the illness and its treatment. The illness may affect a persons mobility and independence, and change the way they live, see themselves and/or relate to others. These changes can be stressful and cause a certain amount of despair or sadness, which is normal.

In some cases, having a chronic illness can trigger whats known as clinically significant depression, itself a potentially serious but treatable illness. The doctor and patient must decide whether symptoms of depression are just a normal reaction to the stress of having a chronic medical condition or are so intense or disabling that they require additional treatment with an antidepressant.

Depression And Suicide Risk

Depression usually does not lead to suicide ideation. But, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services, studies have shown that about two percent of people who have been treated for depression in an outpatient setting will die by suicide. If the treatment is inpatient, the number doubles to four percent. Men are more likely to die by suicide after depression than women.
