How To Cope With Anxiety And Depression In 2022

Frontiers in Psychiatric Treatment: Depression

Anxiety and depression affect many Americans today. Learning coping skills to manage anxiety and depression must be a priority this year.

The best way to do this is through individual counseling. Therapists can provide you with hundreds of coping mechanisms and regulating emotions. They can also help you create a toolbox of activities to help you manage all areas of your life.

Individual counseling is a process in which you work with a licensed mental health professional to resolve negative symptoms and other issues related to a mental illness. Your therapist will perform an extensive evaluation to develop the best treatment plan when you begin individual counseling.

With your input, you will decide if you wish to seek additional help from a Psychiatrist for possible medication assistance or groups where you can receive support from peers. Therapists can teach you how to take care of yourself first to take care of others better later.

Working with a licensed therapist can assist you in completing all the following strategies so you can better cope with anxiety and depression in 2022.

MidWest Center Attacking Anxiety and Depression

While normal levels of anxiety may be helpful, excessive anxiety can cripple a young persons ability to function, undermine their lives going forward, and endanger their overall welfare. Adolescents are particularly vulnerable to anxiety as they transition into adulthood. More so than at any other time in life, the adolescent brain is capable of remarkable adaptability. Unfortunately, this challenging developmental phase is also a peak time for the clinical onset of many mental illnesses.

Anxiety and avoidance behavior can have a damaging impact on daily life including outcomes at school, friendships, and intimate relationships. When anxiety becomes so disruptive that it interferes with the individuals daily life or their family, it is time to seek the attention of a trained clinician. Tragically, a young person with an anxiety disorder may drop out of school, abuse drugs or alcohol, or may attempt or commit suicide.

One of our clinicians has tested positive for COVID-19. That clinician has notified all individuals she had a session with her last 2 weeks in the office If you have not been notified individually, it was not your clinician. This clinician began having symptoms over the weekend of March 13th and has not been in the office since March 12. It is our understanding that the risk of infection is greatest when people are symptomatic. We have been vigilantly wiping down surfaces with antiseptic wipes and other cleaners regularly for a few weeks. We began offering phone sessions this week so that we can provide services to you while minimizing contact as recommended by the CDC. While we believe that any potential risk of infection to clients is low, we are sending this out of an abundance of caution, so that you can take whatever measures you believe are necessary for you and your family.

Please feel free to come to session if you are comfortable doing so or reach out to us about other options available to you during this time.

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a treatment approach that helps you change your thoughts about and reactions to negative situations. For example, if a negative conversation with a friend leaves you feeling down, cognitive behavioral techniques can help you redirect your thoughts and change your negative reaction to the conversation. How you think has a strong effect on how you feel. When you are not aware of what you are thinking, you risk repeating negative thoughts that cause depression and anxiety.

Cognitive behavioral therapy has been proven effective in more than 400 clinical studies. For this reason, our experienced behavioral health specialists, including psychologists, psychiatrists, and licensed clinical social workers, use CBT to target negative thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors that cause and sustain unwanted symptoms.
