Who Was St Jude Known For
Tradition asserts that Jude the Apostle preached in Mesopotamia, Syria, Samaria and Persia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62 AD and assisted in the election of James as bishop of Jerusalem.He then left to spread the Word of Christ to Persia and suffered martyrdom in Armenia which was part of the Persian empire. In time, St. Jude came to be regarded as the special patron of hopeless cases, possibly because it was felt that devotion to him had been neglected for some time, most likely because of his name being the same as the traitor Judas . A little office of St. Jude appeared and in abbreviated form, the main prayer reads:Most Holy apostle, most faithful friend and servant of Jesus Christ, Jude Thaddeus, who is invoked as the special advocate of those who are in trouble and almost without hope, pray for me that by your merits, I may receive consolation in my tribulations and difficulties and finally, with you and all the elect, I may love and bless God eternally. Amen.

St. Jude, also known as Judas Thaddaeus, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Not to be confused with Judas Iscariot, Christs betrayer. Judas Thaddaeus is often referred to simply as Jude in the bible.
Due to the two apostles, Judas Thaddaeus and Judas Iscariot, having the same first name, it was believed that many Christians avoided praying for help from St. Jude because they did not want to call upon the wrong Judas by accident.
Many believed that since St. Jude was often overlooked in prayer, he became eager to help anyone that asked him to intercede. So much so that he would help with almost any lost cause or hopeless case in order to prove his devotion to Christ.
Thats why he is the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes in the Roman Catholic Church.
According to the New Testament, St. Jude was a relative of Jesus, possibly his brother or cousin . He was said to have been a carpenter .
He preached in Jerusalem and Samaria. He was eventually martyred in Persia by being sawed in two, after which he was buried by an unnamed woman and his body miraculously brought back together again.
The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates his feast day on October 28th.

Good Saint Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to Them for me and obtain my request.

According to tradition, as with another great saint, St. Philomena, St. Dymphna was martyred as a teenager for her purity when she resisted the advances of a powerful figure.
In St. Philomenas case, it was the Roman emperor Diocletian in the Fourth century. In St. Dymphnas case it an Irish pagan King named Damon, her own father, in the Seventh.
Apparently, St. Dymphnas mother, who was quite beautiful, died when the child was only about 14. This so distressed King Damon that he sought to have his own daughter, who was Christian, take her place. Before this occurred, St. Dymphna had taken a vow of chastity, consecrating her virginity to Christ.
As with St. Philomenas story, this account is given to us from tradition and its authenticity has been disputed, but the relics of both Saints have been very powerful indeed!
