Depression In The Bible

When we read about depression in the Bible, we see it appear in at least two ways. Some passages describe symptoms one would associate with depression, and that strongly hints that that was what the speaker was suffering from. Other passages stand as an encouragement when youre going through depression.

It must be noted that there are different kinds of depression, some of which are situational, and some that result from a combination of biological, environmental, and other factors. A person may thus get depressed when they lose a loved one or something of significant emotional value, but they can also get depressed because certain neurochemicals arent in a good balance.

Some of the passages that seem to hint at depression in the Bible include the following:

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony. My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long? Turn, Lord, and deliver me save me because of your unfailing love. Among the dead no one proclaims your name. Who praises you from the grave? I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed with weeping and drench my couch with tears. My eyes grow weak with sorrow they fail because of all my foes. Psalm 6: 2-7

Psalm 6 above was written by David, the man after Gods own heart, and the following Psalm was written by a man named Heman. It is a prayer of deep despondency, telling of the anguish of the soul:

Therefore I Say Unto You Take No Thought For Your Life What Ye Shall Eat Or What Ye Shall Drink Nor Yet For Your Body What Ye Shall Put On Is Not The Life More Than Meat And The Body Than Raiment Matthew : 25 Kjv

The Lord does not want us to be burdened by worrying about trivial matters. Instead He wants us to put our faith in Him and trust that He will provide our needs.

Philippians 4:6 says, “Be careful for nothing but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God”

God provides and cares for the birds and the lillies and He will also provide for you. There is a good reason why the NIV translation of verse 34 states, “…do not worry about tomorrow… each day has enough trouble of its own”.

Showing gratitude for each day and the blessings it has and having faith enough to place the needs and worries of tomorrow in God’s hand is a great way to deal with anxiety while exercising faith in God’s provision.

When you trust God for your strength you can find hope that you dont have to find your own way out of the depths of depression.

Jesus Will Take Your Burdens From You

Then Jesus said, Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light. Matthew 11:28-30

To get the rest from the oppressive burden of depression, Jesus tells us to take our burdens to Him. Jesus speaks of His yoke. A yoke is a device that was used in farming, where two oxen would be yoked together to pull a plow.

When My Father And My Mother Forsake Me Then The Lord Will Take Me Up Psalms 2: 10 Kjv

This passage is a reminder that you can always rely on God for His support. In circumstances where you are not able to depend on the help of your friends and family members you can count on God.

The Lord is not just the creator of the universe. He is your father and a dear friend. The love He has for you is far greater than any earthly father can ever give. In addition to that, He is the best companion you could ever have because He is closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24 states, “and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother”.

David poured out his desires before the Lord because he knew there is no problem that is too hard for God to fix.

Sometimes we become emotionally and mentally bruised because we try to do everything on our own and with our own strength. After a while we become overwhelmed, frustrated, and even depressed.

Another lesson we may learn from this text is to seek assistance. While we depend on the Great Physician and professional help to deal with depression we have to be open. We need to express ourselves openly to work through our emotions. Otherwise we will only be harming ourselves and weakening the prospects of getting better.

Its more helpful when we talk about our burdens and troubles rather than hide what we are going through.
