When your doctor prescribes any medication, be it an antidepressant or another type of medicine, there are several considerations behind the decision.

The selection criteria are extensively diverse, given that antidepressants can have varying effects on different patients.

Below are some of the factors that can help shape the decision of your physician.

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of Antidepressants

Some people may experience sexual side effects such as decreased libido or delayed or less powerful orgasm, sleepiness, and weight gain.

Others may experience common side effects such as:

  • Dry mouth
  • Tremors

It takes about a week for most of the initial side effects to subside.

Contact your doctor if you experience side effects for a long time. You can ask your clinician for assistance in finding the right drug for you from among the many choices.

For many years, benzodiazepines have been widely prescribed to treat forms of anxiety disorders and panic disorders. The rate of prescribing benzos like Xanax , Valium , Klonopin , and Ativan is in the millions per year.

However, benzos are habit-forming substances and can cause physical dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and other long-term side effects.

Benzodiazepines are usually not meant for long-term anxiety treatment. Safer alternatives to benzodiazepines are important, serving as long-term anxiolytics with lower risks of substance abuse and dependence.

Are Benzodiazepines For Anxiety Safe

Some of the most popular anti-anxiety medications are benzodiazepines, including Xanax, Ativan, Valium, and Tranxene, to name a few. And in many cases, they work well and can help people better manage their anxiety when taken alongside mental health treatment. But in some cases, they may do more harm than good.

Part of what makes benzodiazepines so effective at treating anxiety is that they are sedatives, meaning they make it easier to relax. When taken as prescribed, their sedative properties can help counter many anxiety symptoms. But when taken in excessive quantities, especially with the intent being to enjoy the effects rather than treat anxiety symptoms, these medications can be habit-forming and easily abused.

This is why, when an individual with anxiety has a history of addiction, they are typically prescribed a non-addictive anxiety medication. Lets take a look at what some of those options look like.

Treating Anxiety & Benzodiazepine Dependence

Benzodiazepines can help reduce symptoms of anxiety, such as panic attacks, in the short-term. However, they can damage your health in the long-term. If you are struggling with chronic anxiety, you may want to look at other long-term treatments for your mental health.

You may also be dealing with benzodiazepine withdrawal if youve taken benzos for any amount of time. A professional treatment program can help you manage your withdrawal while you try to stop taking benzos.

Are There Any Side Effects

Not everyone who takes benzodiazepines will get side effects. Talk to your doctor if you are worried about side effects.

Addiction

You should only be prescribed benzodiazepines for the shortest amount of time possible. Taking benzodiazepines regularly for a few weeks or more can lead to addiction. Doctors recommend that you only take them for 2-4 weeks.

Intermittent use may help to avoid addiction. Intermittent means that you dont take it regularly. For example, you dont take it every day.

The risk of addiction is higher if you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse. Or if you have a personality disorder.

Common side effects

  • Hallucinations. This is when you see, her, smell or feel things that are not there.
  • Delusions. This is where you have beliefs that dont match reality

When will withdrawal side effects stop?

Your withdrawal side effects will usually stop after a few weeks. But they can last longer for a small amount of people. You may not get withdrawal side effects when you stop your benzodiazepine medication.

You should talk to your doctor or local pharmacist if you are worried about the withdrawal effects of benzodiazepines.

Is there anything that can help with my symptoms through withdrawal?

Antidepressant and mood stabilizing drugs may help with the withdrawal effects of benzodiazepines.

If you have insomnia you may benefit from treatment with melatonin.

Alternatives To Benzodiazepines For Anxiety

There are several types of medications used to treat anxiety disorders.

Within each of these categories, there are subgroups of drugs that work differently and have their own benefits, risks, and possible side effects.

Theyre supereffective in treating anxiety disorders, says Beth Salcedo, MD, the medical director of the Ross Center for Anxiety & Related Disorders and a past board president of the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. Its not known exactly how SSRIs work on serotonin to alleviate anxiety, says Dr. Salcedo, but what is known is that theyre not addictive like benzodiazepines are .

Its important to follow your doctors instructions when taking any prescription drug. Talk to your doctor if youre concerned about the side effects of a medication, or if the drug youre taking doesn’t seem to be alleviating your symptoms.

Do Benzos Work For Anxiety

Yes, and they usually work very well. In general, they are good for treatment of many types of anxiety problems over short periods of time.

Benzos are very helpful for treating panic attacks, at least for the first 1 to 2 months. After that, other treatments like antidepressants or psychotherapy should be used as the main treatment.

They are also helpful for treating GAD. For GAD, they should only be taken for 1 to 2 weeks and not over long periods of time.

Lastly, benzos can be very useful for social anxiety and phobias, especially if they are taken occasionally and as needed to help you get through difficult situations.

Even though benzos are helpful for lowering anxiety, they are rarely the best choice alone. Most anxiety disorders are best treated with other medications and psychotherapy.

Benzos do not help with depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, and many other mental health problems.

Anxiety Medication Combined With Therapy

The other evidence-based treatment for anxiety is cognitive behavioral treatment and its important to understand that in our big study, where we compared combination treatment of cognitive behavioral therapy and medication with either one of those treatments alone, that the combination beat them all handily. So when youre thinking about the very best treatment youve got to be thinking in terms of medication plus a psychological intervention.

Benzodiazepine is a common drug for treating anxiety , depression, and sleep disorders. This drug is typically used in the relief of depression associated with bipolar disorder and anxiety that accompanies it. This medication is also used frequently in the treatment of a host of other conditions as well.

Which benzodiazepine is best for anxiety? The answer will ultimately depend on your individual needs. While this class of drugs may be effective at combating anxieties, they all have different effects. Which one you end up taking will largely depend on which symptoms you are trying to combat. If your doctor feels that you are physically dependent on the benzodiazepine, then he may prescribe antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications instead .

How Benzodiazepines Treat Anxiety

Xanax has boxed warnings. These are the most serious warnings from the Food and Drug Administration . Boxed warnings alert doctors and patients about drug effects that may be dangerous.

Using benzodiazepines, even as prescribed, can lead to physical dependence and withdrawal if you stop taking the drug suddenly. Withdrawal can be life threatening.

Using benzodiazepines can also lead to misuse and addiction. Misuse of benzodiazepines increases your risk of overdose and death.

Only take these drugs as your doctor prescribes. Talk with your healthcare professional if you have any concerns about safely taking a benzodiazepine.

The Best Antidepressants For Treating Comorbid Depression And Anxiety

Most people suffer from both anxiety and depression. They are also more likely to struggle with the comorbidities of the two conditions.

When both anxiety and depression are present, the quality of life, functional impairment, and treatment outcomes tend to be poorer.

The following explores the medications considered to be best suited to treating anxiety and depression.

Apart from medications, patients with anxiety disorder and depression also require psychotherapy, support groups, and other non-pharmacological treatment methods.

Further, it is crucial to manage both acute and chronic symptoms of these disorders. Reducing anxiety symptoms can often lead to easing depression symptoms.

Antidepressants are also used for relaxation as well as treating depression.

Referral To A Specialist

If you have tried the treatments mentioned above and have significant symptoms of GAD, you may want to discuss with your GP whether you should be referred to a mental health specialist.

A referral will work differently in different areas of the UK, but you’ll usually be referred to your community mental health team.

These teams include a range of specialists, including:

  • psychiatrists
  • occupational therapists
  • social workers

An appropriate mental health specialist from your local team will carry out an overall reassessment of your condition.

They’ll ask you about your previous treatment and how effective you found it.

They may also ask about things in your life that may be affecting your condition, or how much support you get from family and friends.

Your specialist will then be able to devise a treatment plan for you, which will aim to treat your symptoms.

As part of this plan, you may be offered a treatment you haven’t tried before, which might be one of the psychological treatments or medications mentioned above.

Alternatively, you may be offered a combination of a psychological treatment with a medication, or a combination of 2 different medications.

What Is The Best Benzodiazepine For Performance Anxiety

Anti Anxiety Pharmacology: Benzodiazepines and Barbiturates

I have anxiety giving presentations to an audience. What is the best benzodiazepine for this?

Answer:

Benzodiazepines are not actually a preferred medication for performance anxiety, or stage fright. The preferred medication for performance anxiety are beta blockers, like propranolol. The main reasons why beta blockers are preferred over benzodiazepines are that propranolol is effective at reducing the physical symptoms of anxiety by blocking the adrenaline receptors, and propranolol is not an addictive drug, while benzodiazepines have side effects like sedation and tremors, and benzodiazepines are potentially addictive.

But if you and your doctor decide on taking a benzodiazepine for performance anxiety, then the best benzodiazepines are lorazepam and clonazepam . Lorazepam and clonazepam have less addictive potential than diazepam and alprazolam , as diazepam and alprazolam give a person a euphoric feeling , thereby increasing the risk of addiction. Lorazepam and clonazepam have less euphoric effects.

If you want anxiety relief for just a couple of hours, then lorazapam is your best choice. For longer anxiety relief, your best choice is clonazepam. But hopefully, you and your doctor will agree that beta blockers are the best choice overall for performance anxiety.

  • affect your judgement,
  • make your reaction times slower, and
  • make you tired

If you are affected by your medication you should not drive until the effects wear off.

It is illegal to drive if you are affected by drugs such as benzodiazepines. Ask your doctor if you are safe to drive whilst taking your medication.

Ssri Antidepressants For Anxiety

Many medications originally approved for the treatment of depression are also prescribed for anxiety. In comparison to benzodiazepines, the risk for dependency and abuse is smaller. However, antidepressants take up to 4 to 6 weeks to begin relieving anxiety symptoms, so they cant be taken as needed. Their use is limited to chronic anxiety problems that require ongoing treatment.

The antidepressants most widely prescribed for anxiety are SSRIs such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Lexapro, and Celexa. SSRIs have been used to treat generalized anxiety disorder , obsessive-compulsive disorder , panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Common side effects of SSRIs include:

  • Fatigue
  • Increased sweating

Noradrenaline And Specific Serotonergic Antidepressants

Because completely new drugs take a long time to be developed which doesnt happen very often there needs to be a way for people to find alternative options.

In these cases, a small modification of an existing drug may provide the solution. NaSSAs are a modification of SNRIS.

When needed, Noradrenaline and Specific Serotonergic Antidepressants are used for different illnesses that affect similar biological systems in the body.

Specifically, NaSSA stimulates an increased release of norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine in the synaptic clefts .

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors

What You Should Know Before Taking Anti

In most cases, the first medication you’ll be offered will be a type of antidepressant called a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor .

This type of medication works by increasing the level of a chemical called serotonin in your brain.

Examples of SSRIs you may be prescribed include:

  • difficulty achieving orgasm during sex or masturbation
  • in men, difficulty obtaining or maintaining an erection

These side effects should improve over time, although some such as sexual problems can persist.

If your medication isn’t helping after about 2 months of treatment or it’s causing unpleasant side effects, your GP may prescribe an alternative SSRI.

When you and your GP decide it’s appropriate for you to stop taking your medication, you’ll normally have your dose slowly reduced over the course of a few weeks to reduce the risk of withdrawal effects.

Never stop taking your medication unless your GP specifically advises you to.
