Can Weight Loss Pills Cause Depression

Loss Of Libido & Fatigue After Stopping Birth Control

Can stress or anxiety cause weight loss?

This was something Paige wasnt too happy about either. You see, her doctor had told her the answer to her low libido was as simple as stopping that pill. However, as a doctor who has helped thousands of women recover their hormones after using synthetic birth control, I can assure that you that a missing libido post-pill is more the norm. Libido and energy levels in general go hand-in-hand and you may suffer from fatigue after stopping birth control, only worsening the situation. And just like your mood, the only way to get your libido back is to kick that pill and to take steps to reset your hormones.

Eating libido supportive foods like dark chocolate, pineapple, spinach, and oysters are beneficial foods to get you and your libido back together.

Nourishing your adrenals is a huge part of your overall hormone health, including reclaiming your sex life, which is why it is one of the key topics I address in my Post-Birth Control Hormone Reset Program. For Paige adaptogens, along with a hormone friendly diet and daily mind-body practices were exactly what she needed to get her libido back on-line and take her orgasms to the next level.

Can Orlistat Cause Hair Loss

Doctors monitor patients who take Orlistat carefully for side effects such as losing a significant amount of hair. This might be caused because the medication stops the absorption of some of the fat you eat, and as many vitamins and minerals essential for maintaining healthy hair are fat-soluble if you reduce the fat absorbed you cut down on the number of essential vitamins you then take in as a result.

In summary, yes Orlistat is known to cause hair loss in some people, particularly those that are lacking in minerals and vitamins prior to taking this medication.

Does Lamictal Cause Weight Gain Or Loss

Steven Gans, MD is board-certified in psychiatry and is an active supervisor, teacher, and mentor at Massachusetts General Hospital.

If youâre concerned that taking the medication Lamictal may cause you to gain weight, thereâs good news. It probably wonât affect your weight much at all. If anything, youâre more likely to lose weight because of Lamictal than to gain weight, but either way, the changes will probably be pretty small.

The effect of Lamictal on weight has been studied quite a bit and various clinical trials have found a minimal impact gain. In fact, some researchers even have looked at the drug as a possible treatment for obesity and as a treatment for binge-eating disorder.

This should be reassuring to people with bipolar disorder since so many medications used to treat the condition can cause weight gain.

Zoloft And Appetite Suppressants

If you need to lose a lot of weight, your doctor might prescribe FDA-approved appetite suppressants such as phentermine, diethylpropion and phendimetrazine. These drugs do not interact with Zoloft, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center Drug Checker. However, you cannot safely take any prescription appetite suppressant for more than 12 weeks at a time. In rare cases, these diet drugs may worsen your depression. If you have a history of drug or alcohol abuse, you should not take appetite suppressants.

Patients are not always warned about the weighty impact of antipsychotics, antidepressants and stimulants

Unexpectedly losing a loved one launched 18-year-old Debra* into an episode of major depression, triggering dangerous delusions that landed her in a hospital. Her doctor immediately started her on an antidepressant and on risperidone , an antipsychotic. In little more than a month, her weight shot up by 15 pounds. Gaining weight made it even more difficult for me to want to leave my house because I felt self-conscious, Debra says.

AntipsychoticsAccording to a 2014 review of eight studies, as many as 55 percent of patients who take modern antipsychotics experience weight gaina side effect that appears to be caused by a disruption of the chemical signals controlling appetite. Olanzapine and clozapine are the top two offenders studies have shown that on average these drugs cause patients to gain more than eight pounds in just 10 weeks. These two drugs also bear the highest risk of metabolic syndrome, which encompasses weight gain and other related disorders, including type 2 diabetes, according to a 2011 study of 90 people with schizophrenia. Although most antipsychotics are associated with weight gain, aripiprazole and ziprasidone stand out for their lower risk.

You may need to do more than 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity a week to reach or maintain your weight-loss goal.

Drugs That Affect Hormones

These drugs include hormonal forms of birth control as well as estrogen replacement therapy for menopausal symptoms. Variations in hormone levels in women are often associated with depression symptoms, although it is not completely understood how this interaction occurs. Research suggests that progestin-only birth control is unlikely to cause symptoms of depression.

Not everyone loses weight when they stop taking the Pill. Some gain a few pounds. Research shows that a third of women who stop taking oral contraception lose weight, a third gain weight, and a third stay exactly the same, says Dr. Dweck.

If the scale goes down, its most likely water weight, since being on the Pill can cause water retention. But remember: Losing water weight isnt the same as losing fat, so any lost pounds likely wont last.

The table below lists prescription drugs approved by the FDA for weight loss. The FDA has approved five of these drugsorlistat , phentermine-topiramate , naltrexone-bupropion , liraglutide , and semaglutide for long-term use. A sixth approved drug, setmelanotide , is limited to people who have been diagnosed with one of three specific rare genetic disorders, which must be confirmed by genetic testing. Psychiatric Symptoms May Signal Brain Damage From Diet Pills

Users of widely prescribed diet pills may suffer irreversible loss of brain serotonin nerve terminals, possibly resulting in symptoms of anxiety, depression, cognitive and sleep problems, suggests the first author of a newly published report on fenfluramine side effects. National Institute of Mental Health researcher Una McCann, M.D., and colleagues, report on their review of 90 animal studies on serotonin neurotoxicity and primary pulmonary hypertension from fenfluramine and its chemical cousin dexfenfluramine, in the August 27 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.

An estimated 50 million people have taken the drugs, often in combination with phentermine , an amphetamine-like diet drug that counteracts the fenfluramines’ tendency to induce drowsiness. The study cautions that if the animal findings apply to humans, the brain damage “would be expected to occur in almost everyone taking a dose sufficient to achieve weight loss.”

The researchers advise doctors to be vigilant for both behavioral and cardiopulmonary side effects, and that patients be apprised of the risks and benefits of fenfluramines for weight loss.

How Antidepressants Cause Weight Loss

The way antidepressants cause weight loss is unclear but experts believe it may be due to the way the medications affect neurotransmitter activity in the brain.

Regardless of the method of action, there is no guarantee that Prozac or Wellbutrin will cause weight loss. The response to these drugs varies on an individual level.

The Pills Impact On The Brain

Although it has been on the market for more than 50 years, relatively few studies have looked into hormonal birth controls effects on the brain. A 2014 study in Frontiers in Neurosciencedelved into the existing science and found that taking the Pill alters neurotransmitter function and causes structural changes in the brain, including changes in the prefrontal cortex , anterior cingulate gyrus , cerebellum , and parahippocampus .

Although the researchers didnt offer an interpretation of whatthese changes mean, it appears that the longer you take the Pill the morepronounced the differences are. And their findings suggest that some of these changesmay not be entirely reversible even if you stop taking the Pill.

What Are Overweight And Obesity

Health care professionals use the Body Mass Index , a measure of your weight in relation to your height, to define overweight and obesity.

People who have a BMI between 25 and 30 are considered to be overweight. Obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or greater. You can calculate your BMI to learn if you are overweight, have obesity, or have severe obesity, which may increase your risk of health problems. Your health care professional can assess your individual risk caused by your weight.

If you are struggling with your weight, a healthy eating plan and regular physical activity may help you lose weight and keep it off over the long term. If these lifestyle changes are not enough to help you lose weight or maintain your weight loss, your health care professional may prescribe medications as part of your weight-control program.
