Much debate surrounds this question. Is anxiety on the rise, or are we simply more inclined to think and speak about it these days? This is a tough question to pick apart, but we must try.

The American Psychiatric Association ran a poll on 1,000 U.S. residents in 2017, and they found that nearly two thirds were extremely or somewhat anxious about health and safety for themselves and their families and more than a third are more anxious overall than last year.

They also noted that millennials were the most anxious generation.

In 2018, the same poll was repeated. Anxiety was shown to have risen again by another 5 percent.

Millennials were revealed to still be the most anxious generation.

It is crucial to remember, though, that increasing feelings of anxiety do not equate to a diagnosis of anxiety disorder.

Naturally, it is possible to feel more anxious than you previously did without it being classified as a mental condition.

Looking at the broader picture, several studies have charted the rise of mental health issues in the West.

For instance, a meta-analysis published in 2010 took data from studies that included over 77,000 young people the scientists found generational increases in mental health issues in 19382007.

As for Europe at large, a huge analysis that was published in 2011 concluded that almost one third of adults had some type of mental health issue, with anxiety disorders being the most frequent.

What Are Symptoms Of Anxiety And Depression

It is not uncommon for people with depression to experience anxiety, along with symptoms such as nervousness, irritability, and trouble sleeping. Likewise anxious people can become depressed and experience low energy or a loss of interest in life.

People suffering from anxiety or depression can have a broad range of experiences- some may have only mild symptoms of anxiety and depression, while others may experience debilitating anxiety attacks or severe depression. Symptoms may also fluctuate, from difficult episodes to periods of relief.

You Recently Lost A Loved One

Another trigger can be a recent death. Interestingly, even if the current loss did not feel all that awful, it can remind us of other losses. A grandmother who passes away after years of a devastating illness can feel relieving, but yet, you feel raw from grief, mourning your earlier memories.

A friends parent passing can have you missing your own. Additionally, grief does not have to come from death. A breakup can send you spiraling into despair and worries of being alone before the what next mentality can set in.

Everywhere you look today, people are stressed out. Many reach a breaking point and sink into depression a mental health issue few of our grandparents or great-grandparents experienced.

Perhaps people 50 or 75 years ago just didnt talk about depression, and didnt seek treatment for it. After all, effective treatments werent exactly available back then. Maybe people today are more willing to admit to depression, and thats why it looks like everyone is so stressed and depressed. But when people were asked directly if they felt depressed, that didnt change much between the 1980s and the 2010s.

How can that be? Most people dont realize that having trouble sleeping and remembering are symptoms of depression. Many people admit to being stressed or overwhelmed but dont consider themselves depressed. The problem is that stress is a risk factor for depression, and depression doesnt always appear as extreme lethargy and sadness it often shows up in bodily symptoms.

Today, the world has become fast-paced and every has indulges in high intensity competitions. Because of this the two words- anxiety and depression have become household names. Both anxiety and depression are related to each other. A person might not suffer from both, but there are chances of one illness leading to another.

Early Losses And Trauma

The death of a loved one, loss of a job or the ending of a relationship are difficult experiences for a person to endure. It is normal for feelings of sadness or grief to develop in response to such situations. Those experiencing loss often might describe themselves as being depressed.

But being sad is not the same as having depression. The grieving process is natural and unique to each individual and shares some of the same features of depression. Both grief and depression may involve intense sadness and withdrawal from usual activities. They are also different in important ways:

  • In grief, painful feelings come in waves, often intermixed with positive memories of the deceased. In major depression, mood and/or interest are decreased for most of two weeks.

Grief and depression can co-exist For some people, the death of a loved one, losing a job or being a victim of a physical assault or a major disaster can lead to depression. When grief and depression co-occur, the grief is more severe and lasts longer than grief without depression.

When Stress Turns Into Anxiety

Stress is recurrent throughout the day in many people. Some of them define it as an inherited mechanism that allows them to face and adapt to challenges. In any case, this set of mental and physiological reactions activate in response to work, studies, relationships, and environmental pressure.

Anxiety and depression are like any other conditions there are ways to treat and manage them.

Lifestyle changes, such as spending time with supportive friends and family, regular exercise, getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet and cutting down on alcohol and other drugs are all worthwhile changes that can help to reduce anxiety and depression symptoms.

Psychological treatments, including cognitive behaviour therapy, are effective in treating anxiety and depression and are often recommended first, particularly for mild to moderate anxiety and depression. Your doctor may refer you to see a psychologist or other counsellor for this type of treatment.

For some people, antidepressant medication might also be an option. Antidepressants can be effective for both anxiety and depression. They usually take at least 2 weeks before they start to help, and it may also take some time for your doctor to find the medication and dose that is most effective for you.

Stress Is Not Anxiety Or Depression

Stress is not the same as anxiety or depression but for some people, being stressed for a long time can lead to anxiety or depression, and it can affect a persons physical health, particularly cardiovascular health.

When we talk about being stressed, it usually means were upset or tense about something thats happening in our lives. Stress is a normal part of daily life. Its a natural physical and mental response that is designed to help people cope effectively with emergencies.

Some stress can be a good thing. It can help us get motivated to get things done, but health problems from stress happen when it is regular and doesnt let up.

Anxiety Vs Depression: Treatment

Fortunately anxiety and depression are both treatable. Studies have shown that those willing to commit to a treatment will find their conditions will become less or better still cured.

  • Both anxiety and depression change your way of thinking, so at times there may be thoughts that the condition is untreatable, despite evidence showing otherwise.
  • There is no one size fits all approach to treating anxiety and depression. You may have to try different treatment before finding one that is right for you. You need to be aware of this and try not to feel disappointed or quit treatment if one isn’t suitable for you
  • Anxiety and depression require long term treatments. They won’t have immediate results, because it will involve changing how you see the world and processing this information.
  • Both will have their setbacks. As recovery is a process, it may take time to feel ânormalâ again. Sometimes people will begin to feel alot better but they may still experience sporadic depressive or anxious episodes. Because the two conditions cause negative thinking, these setbacks can lead to feelings of hopelessness that cause people to quit treatments. Remember setbacks are part of recovery.
  • Always seek professional help either from your doctor or a therapist.

Anxiety and depression are treatable, but those treatments can take time so it is important that you are committed to the therapy, treatment or both that is suitable for you.

Mental Markers Of Depression

People with depression may:

  • Feel worthless, as if who they are or what they do is not valuable
  • Think about death due to a persistent belief that life is not worth living or that the individual is a burden on others. In cases of moderate to severe depression, more specific suicidal thoughts can be present.

In major depressive disorder , these types of thoughts are persistent most of the day and more days than not for weeks on end. If a person vacillates between a very low and very high mood state, then a diagnosis of bipolar disorder may apply. For any variant of a mood disorder, the low mood state is likely to be characterized by the type of thinking described above.
