How Is Depression Treated

Depression treatment typically involves medication, psychotherapy, or both. If these treatments do not reduce symptoms, brain stimulation therapy may be another treatment option. In milder cases of depression, treatment might begin with psychotherapy alone, and medication added if the individual continues to experience symptoms. For moderate or severe depression, many mental health professionals recommend a combination of medication and therapy at the start of treatment.

Choosing the right treatment plan should be based on a persons individual needs and medical situation under a providers care. It may take some trial and error to find the treatment that works best for you. You can learn more about the different types of treatment, including psychotherapy, medication, and brain stimulation therapies on the NIMH’s depression webpage. For information on finding a mental health professional and questions to ask when considering therapy, visit NIMHs psychotherapies webpage.

Gen Z Entertainment Wallows In Self

Another narrative that YA content has consistently bolstered is the fact that the characters are almost always in a constant state of fragility and fetishize playing victims. To be fair, there are movie characters that are real victims like Hugh Glass, who is left for dead by his troop in The Revenant, or Django Freeman, who was separated from his wife and sold into slavery in Django Unchained. Those characters and those films were magnificent, but they werent made for Gen Z.

The difference between those film characters and the majority of Gen Z archetypes is that Freeman and Glass, the former fictional and the latter based on a real-life figure, had enough trauma and anguish occur in their lives that it moves the audience to root for them at the end and never devolves into self-pity. The Gen Z characters, however, have their experiences minimized and set to fit something more plausible and modern, which is fine but many of Gen Z problems stem from mental health and emotional baggage.

Entertainment for the latest generation prides itself on having edgy teens with consistent mood swings and that wouldnt be a problem if the entertainment didnt fall into its own pigeonholes. Understandably, its okay to not be okay but falling victim to your emotions, even as a fictionalized character, will only lead you to a path of self-defeat.

The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance

ARE YOU DEPRESSED (TEST)

We weren’t ready for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Canceled after one season, the critically acclaimed fantasy series is, well, a gem. A prequel to the 1982 Jim Henson film, the series returns to the planet Thra, where three Gelflings inspire a rebellion against the absolutely diabolic Skeksis. The puppet design and performances — from a stunning cast including Taron Edgerton, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nathalie Emmanuel — sneak up on you. You’ll find yourself deeply invested in the poor, oppressed Gelflings’ lives, hurt just as much as the puppets whenever one of their own is harmed. A full-on fantasy epic, built with love, care and staggering detail.

Terrace House: Boys And Girls In The City

“Netflix revived a popular Japanese reality TV show this year. I can’t describe how healing it is to watch normal people resolve boring-ass conflicts in a respectful way. This show is the opposite of The Real World. The cast will resolve dramatic issues such as getting their driver’s license, cleaning the kitchen, and coming home too late. It is addictive. It is perfect. And I love it. Please. Someone watch this show. I need to talk about Mizuki with someone.”

My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic

Im biased because Im a hardcore brony, but My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Theres an episode for whatever youre feeling, and whatever happens, everything gets resolved at the end. Call it childish, but it makes me feel like theres still hope and I shouldnt give up. There are even some episodes that handle more adult topics as well, such as the grief of losing a pet or the struggles of starting a business/pursuing your passion as a career. Its simplified because its a cartoon, but it always makes me feel better. Maddie V.

Recommendations From Our Own Mental Health Community

Psycom Executive Editor Ann Gault loves Lars and the Real Girl starring Ryan Gosling when he was still relatively unknown. Lars is a likable introvert who has experienced real trauma in his life. His relationship with a life-size vinyl love doll named Bianca gives the residents in his small Wisconsin town something to gossip about. I love this sweet but slightly-odd film for so many reasons. It provides insight into the connection between emotional challenges in adulthood triggered by childhood trauma. Parts of it are heartbreaking but in the end, the movie has an uplifting message about the transformative power of compassionate people and the healing thats possible with the help of a good psychotherapist! Ann says.

Writer Susan McQuillan, MS, RD, CDN watches Love, Actually whenever she needs a lift. I dont know anyone who feels neutral about this movieyou either love it or hate it, and that can go either way depending on your frame of mind when you see it. Love, Actually is about relationships, love and loss but, to me, its mostly about hope and being true to yourself. Its sweet and funny. When my daughter was growing up we would watch it together at least once a year and still do occasionally so for us, its also become a tradition and a happy memory.

If you’ve ever found yourself thinking that you and your favorite character would totally be friends in real life, you’ve likely experienced this type of involvement. Another type of character involvement is “perceived similarity, where we enjoy the experience of ‘I know what that feels like,’ because it’s affirming and familiar, and may also allow the viewer increased self-esteem when seeing qualities valued in another story.” For example, you’re drawn to shows with a strong female lead because you often take on that role at work or in your social groups.

Does Watching Shows Help You With Depression

I swear every day when im at school i feel depressed about myself because im getting bullied all the time but straight after i get home i just watch my favourite show and I actually feel happy about myself

It helps me keep my mind off of things, which is healthy in small doses. Just don’t watch Bojack and expect to feel happy afterwards.

I love Bojack but I’ve been putting off watching the new season for months now because I know I can’t handle it right now. I’ve just been slowly working through Adventure Time instead.

I’m sorry you’re getting bullied man. People suck.

sometimes you just can’t stop those assholes

It helps me dissociate, but that’s just a poor way of coping with my depression.

Yeah I agree. If youre conscious of it, its not as harmful, but recognize that your just using it as a coping method and not a long term solution.

It’s a poor way, but now you know why we need ’em boxes in our lives. Dissociation helps to cope with reality, it helps well.

It does. During the peak of my depression I discovered British Panel Shows and especially Would I Lie to you? . I used to watch it till early morning because sleep really wasnt coming for weeks due to anxiety and depression rearing its ugly head.

same for me. WILTY then “8 Out of 10 Cats” then “Big Fat Quiz” then “8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown” then “Taskmaster”

The Leftovers had exactly the same effect on me.
